I attended the annual Toward a More Competitive #Colorado (TMCC) event, hosted by Metro Denver EDC, in the company of my colleagues from our Avison Young office. High-level insights were shared from the 2024 TMCC Report and 2024 Economic Forecast for Metro Denver. Combined, both reports unpack the data highlighting Colorado's ability to compete for corporate attraction and business development. Takeaways include: 🔬 Continued expansion in aerospace, bioscience, and the healthcare industries. 🎒 Colorado maintains a highly educated workforce, yet there are opportunities to cultivate local talent and improve graduation rates. 📈 We're in the preliminary stages of an affordability crunch with home prices in the Denver MSA more than doubling between 2014 and 2022. 🏔 The vibrant lifestyle embedded in Colorado's culture has resulted in a population that surpasses national health standards. Is National Links Trust showing a repeatable path to coordinated public/private investment in American municipal golf courses? I hope so. Neglected muni's hurt the game; this country is littered with courses less than 6,000 yards--many architectural gems laying waste--that remind golfers everyday that courses used to be designed and built for stimulating decision- and shot-making, not brute strength and grueling endurance. Re-discovering American muni's can help grow the game of golf; and also change the paradigm that city golf drains cities' budgets. Municipal golf courses are generally shorter, more playable, and more welcoming to beginners than other courses. Less time, less difficult, and hold the dress code are the same characteristics cited to explain golf entertainment's explosion. Whereas golf entertainment facilities sit off highways miles out of town, muni's sit in city centers I posit that city-owned dirt already dedicated to golf is better suited to growing the gamification of golf than farmland in suburban America. Muni's have a market advantage over TopGolf, DriveShack, and other private golf entertainment companies: cities and counties across America already own--and dedicate to golf--premium dirt (real property, you know, land). To be clear, I am not suggesting we plow over municipal golf courses to build a three-tier driving range. I am suggesting that the next time your city or county publishes a request for proposal regarding your local golf course, be open to the idea that the highest and best use--in service of its residents and their engagement with golf--may include aspects of golf entertainment. Wise words as always from my good friend and President at 72andSunny in Sydney, Ross Berthinussen, about the merits of having super experienced strategic and creative folk in your agency. Something we also see a lot of value in at the Orange Panther Collective. Some tangible examples of this: * Smaller teams are more closely involved in the development of the work. This makes communication, collaboration and focus within the team, and client partners, far easier to foster. * The flatter agency structure in many ways ‘runs itself’, as experienced staff are capable of directing their own output and managing their own time – quality control is baked into the model. * A leaner and flatter agency structure fosters a more democratic agency. Everyone is sufficiently experienced and respected to have a voice in the agency’s work, and its future. This encourages bravery and innovation. * It makes projects easier to manage: fewer stakeholders and process stage gates ensure that work can be swiftly ideated and produced. * It removes ‘fat’ from timelines and budgets, ensuring that projects are run more efficiently for clients. * Having senior brains on the business with a broader understanding of business and marketing (and a more finely tuned ‘gut feel’) also leads to faster, more effective work. This by no means says we don’t enjoy working with and helping shape young teams too, there is a time and place for everyone. Tango Charities - #FeedTheCity is one of our favorite organizations to serve with! The event is seamlessly cooridanted by passionate community volunteers like you and me, and you can get involved super easy at the link below in an event/packing group near you. My favorite story of #impact was one of my first packing sessions. I remember the host of the event telling a story of a young kid in south Dallas. Incredibly smart, a scholarship shoe-in easy, only, he would intentionally fail HIS FAVORITE CLASS (math/algebra) each year, so that he could attend summer school for the (continued) free lunches... only he picked Math so he would at least enjoy school year round. 20%, or 1 in 5 Texas children experiences hunger. I don't know about you but as a native Texan, this is unacceptable to me. Hunger deprives kids of more than just food. According to Feeding America and many other organizations in the space of solving #foodinsecurities like #TangoCharities and Feed My Starving Children; kids who don’t get enough to eat — begin life at a serious disadvantage. FOOD IS THE FOUNDATION. For a healthy economy we need healthy minds, For healthy minds we need healthy foundations of food security. People find out I'm an actor and either immediately think one of two things; "that's why public speaking is easy for you" or "so you must love being front and center" and I'm here to dispel both. The thing that folks don't realize, is that when I'm acting, it's not me onstage. I'm not putting ME out there to be raw and vulnerable and open to the public and all of their perceptions and opinions. Public speaking makes my heart rate rise, my hands shake and my stomach turn. Being in front of a crowd, being in front of the room, and having all eyes and attention on me makes me want to hide. I'm left thinking, every single time, of all the people who are more qualified, more articulate, and certainly more interesting, who could be occupying my space. So, that's exactly how I felt when Brian Sano asked me to be a part of this amazing campaign of National Grid's, a Love Letter to Albany. And the truth is, that there are. There are so many more qualified, more articulate, and more interesting people in this beautiful place we call home. People who are inspiring and motivating sustainable change to build stronger communities where ALL can thrive. This is our goal, every single day, as a part of the United Way of the Greater Capital Region but this is a common goal that we share with National Grid and Project C. This is also the common goal of the 26 organizations working out of our for-impact coworking community, The Blake Annex. Whether the focus is youth development, immigration rights, healthcare advocacy, legal services, housing equity, and more, we can all agree on this; we want a more just Capital Region Community, one that is more equitable, more diverse, and more inclusive, for all. So, for that reason, I will never stop saying yes when you all call me. Because while I may not be my own first choice (or second, or third), I do know that I have a responsibility to use this gift and use it not only to entertain but to mobilize, to organize and to advocate. It is a privilege to get to be here. It is a privilege to get to be heard. It is a privilege to take up this space and if I can use this privilege to keep telling YOUR stories then I can be sure that you all are heard. And really, that's what I'm in it for. Thank you, Brian Sano and National Grid for letting me be a part of this campaign. I really love Albany and I really love all of you. We have so much work to do, but we CAN do it, if we choose to go at it, together.
