I'm grateful to JE Dunn Construction and their Oklahoma regional head Jason Bishop for the opportunity to speak to their leadership team about how to take their culture, leadership, and performance to the next level. Companies don't succeed for 100 years straight through accident and leadership by dart-throwing for choosing their future. They do it with planning, purpose, values, and investing in great people. This rapid pace was enabled by: - Using a steel frame that could be quickly erected - Precise planning and coordination - Efficient logistics and material delivery - A large workforce on multiple shifts - Motivation to beat other skyscraper projects - Fewer regulations than today - 32 different trades working together made this possible Despite the Great Depression, speed was prioritized to get the building operational and earning revenue quickly. Thank you all for the kind words! Read on for how someone like me started this process to get to the article. It was surprisingly easy to gather the information and I did much research on what types of questions to ask. Really, just caring and allowing vulnerability got me there (and some time). You see, I worked on this article for several weeks. If you made it this far, here you go. You will likely not need all these questions; explain what your goal is and why. Then compartmentalize the questions to gain information from them through support (more questions). Why do you feel that way? How did that make you feel? Be ready with some personal stories to spark thought if they are struggling with answers (be attentive and vulnerable).   Strengths and Contributions – These get people talking about themselves, make sure they know you care about what you they are saying. Take good notes and revise after completing the interview, the focus should be on them.   What are you most proud of achieving in your role? Who replaces you when you get a promotion? (Who are you training to do your job, that is how we improve as a company) Who do you call when you need help? What specific / unique skills do you bring to the team? What motivates you and gives you satisfaction?   Challenges and Needs - These should provide room for honest feedback about what they need to succeed.   What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role? What could we do to better support you and your work? Are there any specific resources or training you think would be valuable?   Feedback and aspirations – These should help find out how to better serve the individual.   What are your thoughts on the current culture of [insert company or department here]? What would you like to see improved to create a more positive and fulfilling work environment? What are your career aspirations? How can we help you achieve them?

🌟 Building a Strong Foundation in Leadership: Lessons from Construction 🌟 Recently, a friend shared a concerning tale about their new home construction. 😱 ✍ Despite meticulous planning, the foundation was laid incorrectly--just six inches made all the difference, leading to potential flooding during heavy rains. 🌧 My thought was just how important foundations are. In construction, the remedy was to tear out the foundation and redo it, rather than building on top of a bad foundation. There are definitley parallels between this and leadership foundations.
