It's a day that takes me back to a role close to my heart, where I had the honor of bridging the gap between technology and the educational ecosystem. In that role, I had the privilege of witnessing first-hand the transformative power of inspiring our young minds. Encouraging kids and teenagers to dive into STEM subjects isn't just about fostering a future workforce — it's about igniting curiosity, fueling passion, and unveiling the limitless potential they hold to make positive changes in the world. The enthusiasm in their eyes when they solve a complex math problem, the pride in their smiles when they code their first app, or the awe in their faces when they understand the mechanics of a bridge, reaffirm the importance of STEM education. 🌟 I often have off the wall ideas, but turns out this one is bang on: primary school age is the perfect time to shape future scientists! 🚀 If we want to fix the skills and diversity gaps in STEM, we really need to be investing in practical, primary science. This has been blindingly obvious to me for years and it was one of my driving forces to start The Curiosity Box . So it is reassuring to see so much research emerging to support this concept, including this UK Parliament's Science and Technology Committee report (https://lnkd.in/ew_pxUqW), which shows the primary school years are a critical juncture for inspiring future generations towards STEM careers. 🔬 Why not focus on GCSE or A-Level students I hear you ask? Here's why: 1️⃣ Early Impressions Last a Lifetime: children form their attitudes towards science as early as age 7. By engaging them in hands-on, stimulating science activities during primary school, we can ignite a lifelong passion for discovery and inquiry - this ISN'T about STEM careers, it is about LIFE SKILLS. 2️⃣ Breaking Stereotypes: Primary school is where we can challenge traditional gender and cultural stereotypes surrounding STEM careers. This is why we're building our network of Curiosity Champions https://lnkd.in/eh87UQA8 80% are women 25% are Black or brown Many haven't followed a straight academic career 3️⃣ Curiosity Knows No Bounds: Kids are fuelled by an innate curiosity about the world around them. Harnessing this curiosity through exciting experiments, interactive demonstrations, and real-world applications of STEM enables upskilling and foundation building for a future of inquisitiveness. 4️⃣ Building Confidence: When you know the words, have had a go at the techniques and used the kit as a child, your confidence and self-belief blossoms. By providing children with positive STEM experiences, we can instil the belief that they are capable of understanding complex concepts and making meaningful contributions to the world through STEM. Today, as we celebrate National STEM Day, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the opportunity to work with some of the brightest, funniest, and most inquisitive minds in our community. As a high school science instructor and STEM department chair, I have witnessed firsthand just how transformative the power of STEM can be in shaping young minds and inspiring a passion for innovation. STEM fields have always been at the forefront of human progress, driving advancements in medicine, technology, engineering, and mathematics that have revolutionized our world. From the life-saving vaccines that protect us from diseases to the cutting-edge technologies that connect us globally, STEM has undeniably shaped the world we live in today. However, the true impact of STEM education extends far beyond the scientific breakthroughs. It is about nurturing critical thinking skills, fostering creativity, and instilling a sense of problem-solving that empowers students to become active participants in shaping the future. In my own classroom, I have seen the spark of excitement ignite in students' eyes as they dig deeper into the wonders of the natural world, conduct experiments, and grapple with complex scientific concepts. I have witnessed students' confidence soar as they each have their individual "a ha" light bulb moments. Seeing students pursue mastery of challenging science concepts or seeing my NSBE Jr. students design innovative solutions to real-world problems reminds me of why I started on my own STEM journey. It is these moments of discovery and self-belief that make STEM education so profoundly rewarding. We are not just teaching students about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; we are equipping them with the tools and skills they need to become the innovators, problem solvers, and leaders of tomorrow. As we celebrate National STEM Day, let us recommit to ensuring that every student has access to high-quality STEM education, regardless of their background or circumstances. I'm a proud recipient of the Society for Science 2023-2024 STEM Research Grant (Sponsored by Regeneron) for $5,000! This grant allowed me to acquire actigraphy-motion-8 medical-grade sensor watches and a golf motion launch & simulator. This equipment will empower my student researchers to engage in genuine research on the impact of circadian rhythms and golf performance - considering factors such as times of the day (early in morning, mid- afternoon, late in day), hours of sleep by golfer, food consumption, age and time of year (fall versus spring to include light/time changes/and temperature) when driving at the range and putting. Through this initiative, my students will not only gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies but will also cultivate innovative STEM-thinking skills and foster a deeper understanding of STEM concepts through curiosity and exploration. Funding from the grant will also facilitate involvement in several STEM competitions, providing students with opportunities to engage in interactive and competitive learning STEM ecosystems. This opportunity prepares them for future STEM-related careers by illustrating how technology can be harnessed to address real-world challenges. https://lnkd.in/gbpspny4
