On July 1st, we celebrate Keti Koti, marking the end of slavery in the Netherlands, Suriname, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, Saba, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. To honor this day, our team in the Netherlands has crafted this beautiful artwork highlighting traditional food, music, and clothing including; Heri Heri, a dish that consists of cassava, sweet potato, plantain, egg, and fried cod. Bigi Sprikri, the annual, lively parade celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture and freedom. And garments including an Angisa (head scarf), Koto (dress) and Yaki (jacket) worn by Afro-Surinamese women. Today, I celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day. "Our country has long failed to recognize and acknowledge its dark history of erasure and harm brought upon the first inhabitants of the Americas...By designating Indigenous Peoples’ Day a federal holiday, we take a small but important step toward recognizing the injustices in our nation’s history and uplifting the vibrant traditions, history, and culture of all indigenous communities — an integral part of the cultural fabric of the United States." https://lnkd.in/eCx6NvD4

The story of my Catalan ancestors, the Ferran and Subira families, is a testament to the resilience, determination, and pursuit of freedom that defines the Catalan people. Fleeing Franco's oppressive regime during the Spanish Civil War, they embarked on a courageous journey from Catalonia to seek refuge in pre-Castro Cuba, where they began rebuilding their lives, preserving their Catalan heritage amidst a foreign land. Their quest for a brighter future took them to pre-Castro Cuba, where they established themselves and worked hard to create a new life. However, in 1961, when Castro took over in a coup, they found themselves fleeing communism once more, leading them to seek exile in Miami, Florida, where I was born. The vibrant Cuban exile community in Miami welcomed the Catalan families with open arms, offering them a new beginning in a land that embraced their resilience and the values they held dear. My personal connection to this story reflects the Catalan character, valuing hard work, honesty, and respect for others. Growing up in Miami, I inherited the Catalan appreciation for diversity, forging lifelong friendships and embracing the unique blend of cultures that define my hometown. This tale of my family's journey from Catalonia to pre-Castro Cuba and then to exile in Miami is more than just history—it's a living legacy of bravery and adaptability, a story of escaping oppression not once, but twice, and it continues to shape my character, influencing how I approach life and blending the best of two worlds into a unique and inspiring narrative. https://lnkd.in/g5aC5jfY

It’s articles like these sharpen my thinking about decoloniality. Often texts by writers of colour are the ones I learn from mostly. And one sentence here particularly caught my attention, he describes Dutch media as ‘race-illiterate’ and he is right. Ever since Black Lives Matters, already three years ago, I was hoping that finally journaliats would get it. But what I see is that we got (again) passed the hype and white journalists still don’t see inclusion as something they can contribute to. There is a lack of knowledge on the topic of decolonization and it even gets as far as to pushing the whole conversation in a ‘woke’ box. Even at the journalism festival in Perugia there was a lot of conversation about decolonization but there wasn’t a deep understanding of what it means. And, same as last year, there wasn’t a white journalist talking about the topic. We need more white journalists speaking out and putting on the agenda over and over again. From the perspective of a dominant group who needs to change from within: become aware of the fact that we grow up in a system that is made to sustain inequality and that a lot of what we learned when we were younger seems to be untrue. This also effects our minds. It makes us feel disorientated, we don’t recognize the world we grew up in, we feel highly uncomfortable and yet this is reality. This conversation, about how we deal with our privileged positions and what can we do to contribute to more equality. What does it mean to make space? How to contribute without victimizing yourself? And, most importantly, how to connect the dots between our colonial past, the changing climate, global inequality and well being (healing). This article shows how difficult it is to break free from the structures built in colonial times because for that to happen, the dominant group will need to stop putting themselves in the center and start listening deeply and position themselves next to the others instead of above. https://lnkd.in/eC8TNbxN
