For our next edition of Ascen's Staffing Industry Spotlight, our colleague and contingent workforce expert Mickey Pelletier sat down with Lee Willoughby, co-founder of Bubty, talking about direct sourcing, how talent pools for contingent work are different than for permanent work, and how Bubty came to exist. Super interesting conversation throughout. A couple of points stood out to me: 1) Contingent talent pools are all about re-deployment. Since contract assignments are short-term by nature, your talent pool needs to constantly put people back into the pool and keep them engaged so they can do contract assignments continually. Traditional staffing firms do this implicitly, but direct sourcing/talent pooling makes this pool management explicit. 2) Staffing volumes are down across the industry, although direct sourcing is up. Our long-term theory at Ascen is that much of the staffing industry will evolve to direct sourcing/talent platforms plus EOR, away from traditional staffing models. The market may still be fragmented, and staffing firms will still be managing clients, but the delivery model of the market will likely shift towards candidates sourced purely through technological means, as opposed to human recruiters, which will ultimately push down margins.
