Tens of thousands of standards underpin the real economy, all over the world, in every sector. The real economy needs to transition to net zero in order to avert worsening climate catastrophe. That means we need a standard to help facilitate that transition and leverage the power of quality infrastructure, the international system of verifiable standards, conformity assessment, and assurance that powers our global economy. Last week during #LondonClimateActionWeek, Noelia Garcia Nebra, ISO - International Organization for Standardization Head of Sustainability, announced the start of a process, being led by BSI, to develop the world's first international Net Zero Standard. The standard, based on the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, will be developed over the next 18 months with a view to being launched at COP30 in November 2025, and is designed to provide a global solution to guide organizations as they embark on the net zero transition. Until then, organizations are already using the ISO Net Zero Guidelines to support them in developing credible net zero strategies. BSI has been supporting several of these organizations, including the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, General Motors, Climate Action for Associations and Planet Mark in their use of the Guidelines, and published a case study report demonstrating their experience last week.
