Strategic and highly collaborative mission-driven leader | President and CEO of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund
Last week, on my way back to Boston for Thanksgiving, I finished listening to the Big Dig podcast. It is an excellent series that’s well worth a listen. The podcast provides important lessons on the power of community organizing, examples of how leaders can come from different places in organizations (everyone can lead), how critical negotiation and bipartisanship are to achieving big things, and, much more. Perhaps the most important lesson is that I took is that to achieve big things, we need to play the long game. In the case of the Big Dig, it took decades to complete. There were also many starts and stops, politicals changes, and ups and downs, including mismanagement and cost-overruns. Beyond highlighting this amazing engineering project and a cast of colorful and talented pros who played a role in the project, the producer asks the audience if we’re still capable of doing big things, like major infrastructure projects, in our current political environment? For all of our sakes, we need to commit to working together to take on big challenges. We need to play the long-game and find ways to solve big, intractable problems. Our future depends on it. The team at GBH hit a home run with this pod and I encourage folks to take a listen. https://lnkd.in/gdW_HkUn

Time to recall my podcast with Christine Wong where we discuss topics concerning misconceptions when it comes to high performers and best practices to help top performers achieve their goals. You can tune in using this link: https://lnkd.in/d26RrhAv Here's a highlight: Question: I’ve hit a plateau in my performance improvement. What now? (Part 2) Plateaus can be a normal part of a successful learning curve – but sometimes they represent a local maxima or limit on how far our current process for improvement can take us. There’s no playbook to tell us which situation we are in. Whether we should give our process more time or switch up what we are doing. So I recommend the following: When you identify that you have hit a plateau in your results, rather than immediately switching up what you are doing, give it some more time. Keep investing. Taking the pause before switching keeps you from changing tactics too frequently and losing out on what is a good process or methodology. Simultaneously, you can start to research or learn about other ways you could be working towards improvement. Generate some hypotheses about what kind of change could make a difference in your training or practicing. This prepares you to switch tactics efficiently if and when you decide to.

As an accomplished author and innovative entrepreneur, I am deeply passionate about exploring and advancing the synergy between Generative AI technologies and the transformative principles of Dr. Edwards Deming.
In this episode of the Profound Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Ariane David, PhD, who delves into the principles of non-positional thinking and its profound impact on personal and organizational learning. We explore the four principles of non-positional thinking, beginning with the 'uncertainty principle,' which emphasizes intellectual humility and the acceptance that our perceptions and conclusions might be flawed. This acknowledgment opens the door to 'curiosity,' the second principle, fostering a desire to explore and understand rather than to confirm biases. The discussion progresses to the 'principle of discernment,' where information is analyzed critically to separate useful insights from noise. Lastly, we discuss 'courage,' which is essential for challenging our own assumptions and committing to a path of genuine understanding and improvement . Throughout the conversation, Dr. David highlights the dangers of 'adaptive learning' in organizations—learning driven by fear and survival instincts—which often prevents genuine insight and improvement. She contrasts this with 'generative learning,' which encourages a blame-free environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth and learning, thereby fostering a culture that supports continuous improvement and aligns closely with Deming's philosophy.
