This month's Australian Institute of Architects, NSW Chapter bulletin is all about housing abundance - and the need to provide more homes of every type and tenure where people want to live. Adam Haddow's editorial is especially powerful: "We need to revolutionise our attitudes - moving from 'what's bad about this development', to 'let's find the good'. We need to consider underdevelopment as a crime against our communities, because ultimately our communities are our friends and family - and they are struggling. Of course, we should demand excellence, fairness and equity. But we also need to make the road to housing delivery easier." One of our priorities as a movement is to celebrate what's great about modern high density homes and the neighbourhoods they create - rather than "sweating the small stuff" as Adam says. We don't need to fantasise about a future where we're building beautiful apartment homes in beautiful walkable streets because we already are! We just need to clear the way to make that happen everywhere. And that's what we're here to change.

Transitional housing finished - 4 years ago, our design helped to get the lands approved to provide transitional housing for families in need of proper homes. The project is finally opened this year. The good news is that 600 families will benefit from the project over the 5-year cycle. The not-so-good news is the three buildings are still the tiny buildings in this photo among multiple high rises. One tiny project is not likely going to solve much of the housing crisis. However, actions still matter more than words. We are honored as citizen architect that we do what we know to provide architectural solutions during the planning phase for HKCSS. #citizenarchitect Avoid Obvious Architects

"The next government cannot solve the #housing crisis by seducing the electorate with #AI-generated populist imagery. There is no need for The Labour Party to fall for the idea that the future of housing must be sold to the public as a return to traditional, historic ideas...the great places of the future must surely reflect the genius of our age: we must build for future generations with holistic, contemporary, quality #design that is genuinely, #distinctivelylocal." Whilst there is much to recommend from Labour's housing policy*, returning to the past cannot solve all of our future challenges, especially when it comes to #architecture. Brilliant letter in today's The Times from a group of the UK's leading housing architects - including two former Presidents of RIBA and the Govt's former head of architecture - on why #tradarch, whilst not without its merits, is not a panacea for building new homes and places.
