We are proud to share the project of a 4-degree-of-freedom SCARA robot, built by myself and Daniel Viani for the Robot Mechanics exam under the guidance of Professor Alessandro Tasora. From CAD design to Arduino programming to physical realization through 3D printing and subsequent assembly, this project has been one of the most rewarding and educational experiences throughout our five years of study. It demonstrates the entire process of designing a system from start to finish. The robot was constructed using recycled components such as motors and linear guides salvaged from a 3D printer. The remaining structural parts were 3D printed and assembled along with belts and pulleys. Four stepper motors and a servo motor were utilized, the latter for gripper closure. In conclusion, this project exemplifies the culmination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired during our academic journey. It not only showcases our ability to innovate and problem-solve but also underscores the importance of sustainability through the reuse of materials. We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked on such a project and look forward to applying the lessons learned to future endeavors in robotics and beyond. Do you know the Stewart platform? I mean the exact novel design idea that was proposed by D. Stewart, not the Gough-Whitehall platform that many people wrongly name the Stewart platform. In reality, in his review of platforms to be implemented for motion platforms in flight simulators, he actually mentions that the Gough platform could be used but he has designed a novel platform with six degrees-of-freedom on a tripod so for each kinematics chain, we find two linear actuators to achieve motion and simplify kinematics. So far, up to our knowledge, the Stewart platform has never been made but we have remedied to this by making a first model prototype as a proof-of-concept for a mobile platform to provide mobility to training based on Virtual Reality. I have supervised Lewis Sherman, one of our CAD engineering students on his honours degree project. He has also examined how to make low-cost linear actuators from 3D printing and proposed a concept that is working very well with a reversible machine screw. Enjoying seeing solutions to our Project Lead The Way Introduction To Engineering Design sweet improvement project. Ss design two interfacing parts in Autodesk Fusion 360 then exported three different iterations to be 3d printed with UltiMaker 3d printers. Between each iteration Ss used dial calipers to check for precision and accuracy of dimensions and created tolerances from those dimensions. The third and final iteration had to hold 4 starburst candies, the parts had to interface and lock and the candies couldn't shake. Project based learning provides real world academic applications of STEM principles in an organized step by step process.

We encourage rapid prototyping: making use of 3D printing, PCB machining and CNC technology, to quickly test out concepts in our laboratories. But the world is complex, verifying a hypothesis is not always straight forward, and experiments can become time consuming to setup. Fail fast... but what did we learn? Yesterday afternoon I gave a lecture for the MSc and PhD students in our "Power Electronics Packaging, Materials and Emerging Applications" research group, on how to use ANSYS Q3D Extractor as a tool to evaluate and analyze their ideas on a digital platform, to quickly make iterations and gain insights to their electrical designs digitally using 3D finite element analysis, before testing them out. To reach their goals before deadline, it is important to neither spend too long getting stuck in simulations nor fight with experimental prototypes that don't work. Thanks to everyone who attended.
