The U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations has approved the fiscal year 2025 spending bill for Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development. This bill allocates $69.8 billion for rental assistance and self-sufficiency programs benefiting low-income working families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. It also includes funding for housing and services for homeless individuals, as well as support for economic and community development initiatives. We had the honor of showcasing #AzurePrintedHomes at the state Capitol in Sacramento yesterday, alongside lawmakers and community leaders. One of our 3D-printed homes was on display, highlighting innovative solutions to address California's homelessness crisis. This home, just over 100 square feet, offer a temporary, dignified space for individuals to stay while they transition to permanent housing. State Senators Josh Becker and Catherine Blakespear, Assemblyman Gregg Hart, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and Elizabeth Funk, CEO of #DignityMoves emphasized the urgency of the situation, with 67% of California's homeless population unsheltered. Senate Bill 1395, the Interim Supportive Housing Act, seeks to streamline the building process on unused land, making it easier for cities to quickly deploy interim housing solutions. We're proud to be part of this movement, providing eco-friendly, cost-effective, and rapidly constructed housing that can make a real difference in people's lives. As Mayor Mahan noted, these units are more than just shelter—they’re a stepping stone to stability and a better future. Faith-based organizations feel the impact of the housing crisis every day, and they want to help. Outdated zoning shouldn’t get in the way! On Friday, NYC Department of City Planning and Dan Garodnick joined Mayor Adams, Queens BP Donovan Richards, Dr. Gilford T. Monrose, Senator Leroy Comrie, Adolfo Carrión, Jr. and faith-based leaders from across the city at Antioch Baptist Church in Jamaica to share how #CityofYes for Housing Opportunity can help faith-based leaders create urgently-needed homes. I signed a petition telling the California Department of Housing & Community Development (HCD) that "It’s Time that San Francisco Puts Affordability & Equity First!" California Community Reinvestment Corporation (CCRC) was proud to sponsor San Gabriel Valley Consortium on Homelessness’s 2024 Housing Summit: "A New Season: Making Space For Affordable Housing" in San Dimas, CA! In addition to supporting the facilitation of this event, the Summit was also attended in-person by CCRC Relationship Manager Ting Xiao, who canvassed with other housing advocates to understand the implications of public policy on housing in the state of California. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s first Executive Directive, which streamlines affordable housing permitting, was a pertinent topic of discussion, as well as progress towards housing on faith-based organizations’ land and the future of the YIGBY (Yes In God’s Backyard) movement. Additionally, event attendees discussed methods of destigmatizing affordable housing within communities who oppose further developments. This advocacy work is indispensable to reversing decades of destructive narratives on affordable housing, which hurt the effort to guarantee stability and shelter to all Americans. The data on these important frameworks was made available by University of California, Berkeley’s Terner Center for Housing Innovation, Alliant Strategic Development, City of Pomona and National Community Renaissance. Creative legislative and advocacy solutions continue to move the needle on the housing crisis, and events like the 2024 Housing Summit are key to understanding how best to navigate a constantly changing housing landscape. We believe building micro-homes in our community is an effective, wise, and dignified method to create more affordable housing options and reduce homelessness, as mentioned in our 2023 Unsheltered Homelessness Brief (https://lnkd.in/efv6KnNB).   We’re proud to be the convener of the Tiny House Collaborative Team working alongside Fine Arts Center Greenville SC, Bonds Career Center, Craig Gaulden Davis, Inc., and Clancy & Theys Construction Company. This pilot program is giving students direct experience in designing and building a #TinyHome, as well as the opportunity to use their talents to reduce homelessness. They’re a village of micro-homes often with community-based amenities where previously homeless individuals can flourish. When done correctly, they prioritize dignity using the community of tiny homes “as an efficient means to uplift people in need—as opposed to trying to relocate people off the street in the cheapest way possible.” Two examples of tiny home villages are The Village at Glencliff and Community First Village in Austin, TX. Legislative Update! This year’s #PABudget included a significant increase in the transfer caps from Realty Transfer Tax revenue to the PA Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund (PHARE). According to the updated law, the transfer cap will increase by $10 million over the next four years from $60 million to $100 million. This crucial funding will support sustainable and comprehensive projects to: 🏠 Preserve and create affordable housing 🏠 Reduce homelessness 🏠 Support community revitalization 🏠 Promote affordable homeownership 🏠 Address various unmet housing and community development needs across the Commonwealth This is a major step forward for affordable senior housing and community development in Pennsylvania. It takes a dismal 26 months for #SanFrancisco to process applications for new housing -- an issue that has helped lead the city to become known for its scourge of #homelessness. As a result, the city has become the first in the #California, to find itself subject to the provisions of a statute -- SB423 -- which gives the state the power to step in and eliminate many of the hurdles that stand in the way of meeting state-mandated housing quotas. According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, “San Francisco being subject to SB423 means that most proposed housing projects will not require approval from the Planning Commission and therefore won’t be able to be appealed to the Board of Supervisors. Most projects won’t have to undergo extensive environmental reviews”. The bill was sponsored by State Senator Scott Wiener, who proclaimed in a July 1 press release that “A confusing and overgrown permitting process has been throttling housing construction in San Francisco for decades. There are some good lessons in here on how layering different models of shared equity ownership provides huge returns on a community's stability and opportunity. "A partnership with a CLT provides an extra layer to protect the long-term affordability of an LEC, while also providing ongoing support and technical assistance to the co-op. And by creating an umbrella entity under which multiple LECs exist, there are opportunities to take advantage of economies of scale that may not be possible with individual co-ops."
