As we continue to spread the word about the Virginia Community Engagement Index (VCEI), we want to thank the diverse group of individuals and organizations who made this work possible, including AmeriCorps and Points of Light! During the process of building the VCEI, we recruited a Core Team of partners representing 38 diverse public, private, and nonprofit organizations across Virginia to help us identify what the VCEI needed to be. The central questions we set out to uncover were, “Who are Virginia’s community volunteers and civically engaged residents? What do they care about? Where and how are they engaging? And why?” Together, we developed a study that could help us better understand the degree to which service, volunteerism, and civic engagement is a strength in our communities, and how to continue to build and leverage that strength. While on a volunteer trip to West Baltimore with Chris, Jake starts up a conversation with a friendly and candid local named Don. 🗣 The two talked at length about the current status of the West Baltimore neighborhood and the volunteer efforts that were taking place that week. I know you'll see many posts like this today, but I want to invite you to join me in supporting an organization whose mission is important to me. The Homeless Persons Representation Project Inc.(HPRP) provides vital legal assistance to individuals facing economic insecurity and champions community power through legislative advocacy to remove barriers to necessities like housing, employment, healthcare, and public benefits. Did you know? According to the Maryland Legal Services Corporation, out of approximately 1 million eligible Marylanders, roughly 470,000 face legal problems each year. Only 105,000 households receive help through legal services organizations like HPRP, leaving 365,000 Marylanders without fair representation in civil cases. HPRP has been a community leader for over 35 years, working closely with local shelters, social service agencies, government, and community-led organizations to end homelessness through a coordinated approach. What makes HPRP unique? Their dedicated team of 18 staff and over 400 volunteers bring firsthand experience and a deep understanding of homelessness and economic insecurity to their work. They meet clients where they are, whether in courtrooms, shelters, or on the streets, eliminating common barriers to resource access and transportation. HPRP's commitment goes beyond just legal matters – they address underlying challenges and resource needs, ensuring holistic support. HPRP’s legal focus areas include housing justice, economic justice (including veterans’ benefits), workforce and expungement, and issues facing unhoused youth. You can watch us on BBC News here. The Black community are most likely to experience statutory homelessness (no fixed address Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) stats). Looking back, being neurodivergent increased a lot of my access issues. Being unorganised, procrastinating, struggling to make that first call due to anxiety. People are surprised that you can come from a financially stable or middle-class home, have a family and still become homeless. It depends on your support network and family dynamics. It's the little things that make a difference. Signposting to grants, housing registers and someone understanding their rights is a big deal. I didn't even know what a housing register was. At Black Heritage Support Service we re-establish communication in families, we advise, advocate for clients, explain processes, design life action plans for clients and signpost if we can't help. We need more funding to continue our work. We will also help anyone of any background, you do not have to be Black or Caribbean. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's annual Point-in-Time Count, the number of unsheltered individuals has increased. The count happens each January. In 2023, more than 653,000 individuals faced homelessness, a 12% increase from the previous year. Community Action Agencies throughout #MN continue to decrease the number by providing prevention services, rental assistance, financial coaching, transitional housing and even permanent affordable housing to clients.
