One of my favorite parts of the ICIC conference last month (and there were many favorite parts!) was seeing Alberto Perlman, co-founder of Zumba Fitness, speak. And my very favorite part of his very compelling story was when he talked about “persistent iteration”. The minute I heard him say it I had to write it down. Zumba is the world’s largest branded fitness program, but the journey there was far from a straight line, or so-called “overnight success.” Instead, it was all about identifying opportunities, taking chances, some smart decisions and lots and lots of hard work. This year is the 15th year in business for my company and in many ways we are a very different company to when we started out. Our clients are different now, but so are our values and overall mission. I think that “persistent iteration” describes our process too. Not everything we tried worked out (far from it!), but if you are willing to go on the wild ride of entrepreneurship you can’t help but to learn and grow. It's been 5 years since I left Nike to join Summus Sports Group, and 7 years since the company was initially founded. As I reflect on this anniversary, I am reminded of the journey I embarked on with Greg Kirkpatrick all those years ago 👴 These past 5 years have taught me a great deal about entrepreneurship but even more about myself. I'd like to share some of those lessons with you: 1️⃣ if you don’t try you will never know and the only thing worse than failing is wondering 😅 2️⃣ in business as in sport there is not such thing as an overnight success ⏲️ 3️⃣ there will be hurdles and challenges, your success will be defined by how you react to those 🚧 4️⃣ people first, ideas second. You will only ever be as good as the team you are a part of. A good idea without a great team, will only ever be an idea 💡 5️⃣ it’s just a job 😂 keep perspective. It’s not worth losing sleep over, and finding balance will increase prosperity. Thanks to everyone who’s been a part of the journey. Did you know I was a tennis pro in my past life? 🎾 3 lessons from tennis that help me survive & thrive in early stage startups. (In honor of Roland Garros and my upcoming 1 year anniversary at Subscribfy) 1. Moving on from failures FAST In tennis, you lose a lot. You may have heard about Djokovic. An absolute beast, who broke and continues to break all possible records. He lost 20% of matches in his career. You can imagine for an average tennis player this number is way over 50%. In tennis, you lose a lot and it hurts so much. But you can’t afford to dwell on your losses. Analyze what went wrong, get yourself back up there and try again. Moving on from setbacks, mistakes and lost deals FAST has been very important for me in my career. Has nothing to do with how much I want for things to go right or how much I care. I literally cried after losing the deal to a competitor a few months ago. But next day? I put my ‘get-sh*t-done” pants on and hunted for more opportuinities. 2. Winning ugly There is incredible book by American tennis player turned coach / commentator Brad Gilbert. It is called “Winning Ugly.” Yes, sometimes you have an incredible talent, beautiful technique, luck, sponsors, and the physique to achieve great things. But sometimes, all you got is grit, willpower, creativity, drive and your mind. All early-stage companies start with some ugly wins. Wins without a pretty deck, a well-developed brand or a marketing budget. Wins sourced by scrappiness and passion. And if you can learn to win when things are ugly, winning when things are pretty will be a piece of cake. 3. Underdog mentality According to Chat GPT, the definition is… ”The underdog mentality is a mindset that can be psychologically advantageous for a competitor who is less experienced, talented, or smaller than their opponent. It can involve a relentless desire to outsmart and outwork competitors through preparation and taking advantage of situations that others overlook." In tennis, you always have a chance even against the toughest opponents. You always have a chance to turn the match around. Having an underdog mentality is key. All startups start as underdogs. You gotta love the challenge and get excited about winning against all odds. Pressure is a privilege, baby. **** Now, who are you rooting for at Roland Garros? I am all for the 17 year old Mirra Andreeva, she has nerves of steel. 🎾🎾🎾
