I had so much fun nerding out with Rachael Bosch in this recent Fringe Chat on Perfectionism in the Workplace.
In addition to discussing our own perfectionism recovery stories (and why it's ok that they're ongoing!), Rachael and I explored the important differences between perfectionism and excellence and unpacked why the former can actually preclude our ability to achieve the latter.
We also dug into the neuroscience behind why self-criticism is effectively self-sabotage, and why self-compassion (as counterintuitive as it may sound) is actually a superpower rather than a soft and squishy self-indulgence.
Finally, we discussed the why and how of humanizing the workplace and concrete steps leaders and mentors can take to create a culture of growth mindset and psychological safety that brings out the best in their people.
Oh... and Rachael plays her singing bowl :)
Check it out via the link below and let us know what you think!

🤩 We're excited to share Rachael's recent conversation with Jordana Confino on the pitfalls of perfectionism, the power of constructive behavior, and the magic of embracing a growth mindset. Check out the full conversation below! 👇

👋 Hello! I've been mostly offline since last week and I’m back...with a potentially controversial opinion.
I saw a clip of Will Smith (with Martin Lawrence while promoting the new Bad Boys film) and it has been replaying in my head. It spoke deeply to me. Excellence is a habit, but it’s an all-consuming habit. As Fisayo Longe puts it, it requires a "beastmode-level of dedication that can take a lifetime."
However, in my experience, it’s not practical to expect to be excellent in everything, all the time. Working in-house is a team sport, even when you are solo counsel. It requires a system, input, and support from numerous stakeholders working collaboratively. For excellence to be achieved consistently, the entire organization and teams must share it as a core value. Trying to push others towards excellence daily when it’s not a shared value isn’t just exhausting; it’s probably futile.
The key skill then to master is discernment: knowing what truly requires excellence so it can be prioritized.
Do you agree? How do you balance the drive for excellence with practical limitations?
By the way, have you seen the movie yet?

"If you get the culture right, everything else really takes care of itself"
That is a quote from Sir Ken Robinson in his final public speech during lockdown amidst the pandemic 3 years ago. I found, and continue to find, Sir Ken's thinking completely inspiring. His book, The Element, had a profound impact on me at a time when I was going through a lot of personal and professional change.
In this speech, he asks us to consider as we come out of the pandemic, what kind of normal we want to get back to. In his usual beautiful storytelling style, Sir Ken draws powerful parallels between mass farming production systems developed during the Industrial Revolution and our social systems.
Mass production is focused on output, on yield, on the plant. Diversity is stripped away, natural protection is lost and soils are degraded. Organic and sustainable farming in comparison, places emphasis on the soil and on encouraging diversity which creates natural protection - the principle in more sustainable farming methods is if you get the soil right, life flourishes indefinitely.
The focus on mass yield has been replicated in our social systems. Human beings like all life, flourish under certain conditions and wither under others.
People flourish when the culture is right; when individuality is recognised; when the great diversity & depths of talents are valued and a mixed culture is created.
If you can create 15 minutes for yourself today, I would really encourage you to watch this speech which is thought provoking and brought to life in Sir Ken's usual eloquent and captivating style.

Having a little faith with me was a lesson I learned from my first mentor, Al.
Al approached me one day, and said, "Bob, can I share a thought with you for a few minutes?"
He had always been someone to help, especially for me as a new guy in an old company.
But this conversation was different, because I didn't ask for his help.
I was experiencing a growing opposition to my efforts to organize the collective wisdom within our company to serve clients in a more valuable way for them, and a more efficient way for us.
Funny how people sometimes focus so much on reinforcing their butt in their chair, they miss an opportunity that is practically on the floor next to their desk.
So Al and I stepped into a conference room, and he invited me to join him in working with one of the company's key clients.
It was a selfless act, and a strategic one, to combine our strengths for the benefit of our company's growth.
Rather than working on this transformation with new clients, a new process, and a new guy in the company, Al connected the whole effort to an existing client with sophistication and integrity.
And he reinforced my faith in what's possible for all of us.
It's amazing what we can accomplish when we share the credit.
