I had the privilege to attend the Breakthrough Energy Summit #BESummit2024 in London, a gathering of climate tech startups, investors, and industry leaders to discuss and drive the clean energy transition. Here are some key takeaways: 1. Energy is Prosperity: I highly recommend watching the inspiring and insightful keynote by Eric Toone, Breakthrough Energy's CTO and Executive Managing Partner (YouTube below). It's about 45 minutes long and absolutely worth it! Eric explained how energy underpins our economy and global prosperity, emphasizing the extraordinary challenges we face in transitioning from today's fossil fuel-dominated energy mix to a clean energy system. He discussed the roles of solar/wind in the new energy mix and the potential of geothermal, nuclear fusion, and geologic hydrogen. Eric is highly optimistic that breakthrough innovation will drive the clean energy transition and tackle climate change. 2. Execution and Delivery are Crucial: Since Bill Gates founded Breakthrough Energy in 2015, climate tech startup companies have made remarkable progress. Tangible technology de-risking results and scaling-up milestones were showcased on stage and in the exhibition rooms. The clean energy transition is a highly challenging endeavor that requires hard work, resilience, and disciplined execution. Having worked side-by-side with BE Fellows over the last two years, I have great respect for the founders of these startup companies. They will be the future leaders in the clean energy industry! Technology, industry, policy, consumers, and markets all have roles to play. Building broad and strong partnerships and, most importantly, understanding others' perspectives and challenges is essential. Structured workshops at the summit facilitated debates and discussions on selected themes and sectors. 4. Clean Energy Transition is Global: It was gratifying to see attendees from all continents and great to meet with the Singapore delegation. I look forward to collaborating with more international partners!
