One Family welcomes the most recent Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) released by CSO (Central Statistics Office Ireland). The SILC survey reveals significant disparities between one-parent families, the general population, and two-parent households. CEO Karen Kiernan said, "In a country as prosperous as Ireland, it is inexcusable that one-parent families continue to face poverty and deprivation at levels scandalously higher than other families. These statistics represent actual children and families who are forced to navigate daily challenges to meet their basic needs such as food and shelter. Once-off cost of living measures may have provided temporary relief, but the reality of life for these families is that their struggles are ongoing." Have you ever wondered who the ALICE population is and what ALICE stands for? ALICE represents the 27% of Pennsylvanians who work but struggle to survive. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. ALICE earns above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) but makes less than what’s needed to afford basic essentials. ALICE often earns too much to qualify for government assistance, and there is no room in ALICE’s budget for emergency expenses. If you combine PA households earning below the ALICE Threshold with those living below the FPL, 39% of PA households face daily financial hardship in every county in PA. 🔎 Analyzing the Impact: The Expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) 📊 In 2021, the expanded CTC significantly lowered child poverty rates, demonstrating the power of direct financial assistance. With the end of the expansion, ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families face a critical setback. These families are employed and earning above the Federal Poverty Line, yet they struggle to afford basic necessities. The payments from the CTC helped reduce food and housing insecurity, and families reported having more ability to sustain their money each month. As a result, researchers from the Center on Poverty and Social Policy found 800,000 children were kept out of poverty from July to Nov. 2021. We must advocate for our ALICE population to ensure real and sustainable change is created for these families. #ChildTaxCredit #EconomicEquality #UnitedWayNCA #EITC #CommunityUnited

In our region, families are grappling with the rising costs of living, leading to a stark increase in child food insecurity. In DC, 65% of families earning below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Threshold (meaning they earn above the Federal Poverty Line of $26,500 annually for a family of four but less than the basic cost of living for the county/state in which they live) struggle to feed their children. The numbers in Virginia and Maryland are just as grim with 44% and 35% respectively. It’s our collective responsibility to support these families. #CorporateResponsibility #FoodInsecurityAwareness #UnitedWayNCA #BusinessForGood #SocialImpact #LeadershipInGiving #CommunityHealth
