The National Health Innovation Centre (NHIC) provides the publicly funded clinical research sector of Singapore with translational funding and strategic guidance to accelerate healthcare innovation. “Last year showed that the digital literacy of healthcare professionals, patients and all the key pharma stakeholders is growing,” says Donatello Crocetta MD MBA, Head of Global Rare & Rare Medical, Rare Disease at UCB. He is in a unique position to know this because “Working in rare diseases is always challenging, often because most of physicians have seen only few of these patients and therefore can have limited knowledge of the disease.” SciencePOD, as a Media Partners with #Pharma2024, had the opportunity to speak with Crocetta in advance of his panel discussion entitled “Great expectations, greater delivery: Configure innovative customer-facing roles to keep up with HCPs dynamic needs.” The forthcoming Reuters Events Pharma 2024 will run from 16–18 April at the CCIB, Barcelona, Spain. Crocetta believes that “Now, the discussion is more on what experience we want to provide the physicians and the stakeholder community with digital tools and leveraging the power of artificial intelligence." He adds: “We need to make sure that the #digital experience becomes much better than the face-to-face experience that they were used to. They should complement one another; digital tools should not just mirror what you get from face-to-face meetings.” And UCB has been an early adopter of technology such as augmented reality using smart glasses, for example, to mirror the experience of patients affected by Myasthenia Gravis. Crocetta explains: “This allows users to put themselves in the shoes of a patient and experience the daily challenges they face when doing normal daily activities.” He adds: “We are using this with healthcare professionals and for our own internal education to raise awareness on the patient experience.” UCB has worked closely with experts to build a scientific platform called Rare Disease Connect in Neurology (RDCN) which brings together all the critical stakeholders in the disease management: physicians, nurses, patient organisations. Unveiling MedTech Europe’s Manifesto for 2024-2029 “Empowering Patients, Inspiring Innovation”   MedTech Europe, the European trade association for the medical technology industry, unveils its manifesto for the next EU 2024-2029 political cycle. Titled “Empowering Patients, Inspiring Innovation,” the manifesto suggests actionable policies that build on the achievements of the past mandate and take the next steps to truly advance health and well-being in the EU. The objective? “Empowering Patients, Inspiring Innovation.”   MedTech Europe's manifesto calls on the European Union and its Member States to build policies that give access to improving and lifesaving technologies while addressing the evolving needs of healthcare systems in Europe. To that end, the manifesto has a sharp focus on patient-centred care, digital advancement, resilience, and sustainability.   Opening the Policy Pulse Conference, the launch event for MedTech Europe’s manifesto, CEO of MedTech Europe Oliver Bisazza stated, “The EU now stands at a crucial crossroads and the upcoming EU political cycle is an opportunity to show that we take health and well-being of every individual, every patient, seriously. Europe can be more ambitious when it comes to access to innovation for all. The medical technology sector stands ready to play its part."   The manifesto proposes a general direction of travel as well as tangible recommendations so policymakers can enhance patient outcomes, promote medical innovation, and bolster wellbeing in Europe, for the second half of this decade. Now it’s no longer a matter of if and how we want to evolve in that space; it’s finding the level of investment we want to make to reach the audience. 👉 Now the discussion is more on what experience we want to provide the physicians and the stakeholder community with digital tools and leveraging the power of artificial intelligence. We need to make sure that the digital experience becomes much better than the face-to-face experience that they were used to. They should complement one another; digital tools should not just mirror what you get from face-to-face meetings. For example, we’re using augmented reality technology with smart glasses to mirror the experience of patients affected by Myasthenia Gravis. 👉  I believe we should be more open to present some partnership across the industry, even in the private-public partnership space. This is especially true for rare diseases where the level of investment of the company is limited. 👉 Companies need to continue to invest with purpose in innovation and new technology (automation, advanced analytics, gen AI), demonstrate value in wider healthcare to build trust with the community and ultimately focus on the ‘north star’ of delivering better outcomes for patients, including a more personalised health experience.
