🔶 “What does it look like for Business on the GC in 2024?” 🔶 One year on from our inaugural Gold Coast Economic Health breakfast we are going to look both back and forward and compare where we were with where we are. Whilst we have seen a positive shift to tourism numbers returning to the Gold Coast, conferences & events returning and business confidence improving, it is evident that businesses are still facing several challenges. It’s no surprise some of the key issues still revolve around skills & staff shortage across almost all sectors, increased stock prices and delivery volatility and of course the issue of Interest rate rises, property demand and stock shortage are still evident. So, with this all-in mind we seek to address the question “What does it look like for Business on the GC in 2024?” Our Keynote speaker, Malcolm Wood will address some of the key issues relating to the economy and what could be in store for businesses. To help navigate through some of the key pillars, we’ve invited a panel of key Gold Coast Business Leaders to answer some hard-hitting questions in relation to Tourism & Hospitality, Health, Property & Development, Education and Local government. Lochaber Chamber of Commerce are inviting Scottish businesses to join them in Trade Missions to Orange County and Nova Scotia in 2024 https://lnkd.in/e5TVEcyS Frazer Coupland, CEO of Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, said: “Exporting can be a great way for Scottish businesses to grow and diversify. By selling products and services to overseas markets, businesses can reach a wider customer base, increase sales, and create jobs. "Our trade missions are a great opportunity to learn about new markets, to make valuable connections with potential customers and trade partners, and to grow your business internationally. They are a fantastic opportunity for Scottish businesses to dip their toe in the water at a relatively low cost of just £350 for each trade mission.” The missions are open to all Scottish businesses, regardless of size or sector, and businesses do not need to be members of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce to participate. The current site of Victoria Dockside, formerly known as the New World Centre and Holt's Wharf previously, holds a historical significance in Hong Kong's development. Until 1971, it was jointly owned by Swire and Alfred Holt & Co., both of which had their roots in the United Kingdom and played pivotal roles in the British colonial era's expansion into Hong Kong. This collaboration between two British companies in a foreign land not only facilitated trade but also fostered cooperation and trust. Situated strategically near the Tsim Sha Tsui Railway Station, Holt's Wharf served as a vital gateway for transporting overseas goods to mainland China. However, as Hong Kong's entrepot trade declined and the Kowloon-Canton Railway Station relocated to Hung Hom, Swire made the decision to sell the pier to New World Development for HK$131 million in 1971. This historical transition underscores the dynamic changes that have shaped Hong Kong's landscape over the years. It's a testament to the evolution of the city's business environment and the adaptive nature of the companies that have played a part in its growth. #CUHKCFB #FamilyBusiness #Succession #VictoriaDockside #NewWorldCentre #HongKongHistory #BritishColonialEra #TradeHub #HistoricalLandmarks #BusinessEvolution #HongKongDevelopment #SwireGroup #AlfredHoltAndCo #Legacy #Entrepreneurship #HongKongTrade #CulturalHeritage #UrbanDevelopment #HistoricalTransition #UrbanLandmarks #HongKongProperty #EconomicHistory #InvestmentHistory Photo source: Tatler Asia

As President of Castlebar Chamber I was delighted to welcome Minister Michael McGrath Department of Finance Ireland on Thursday 25th April to #Castlebar at Breaffy House Resort to raise issues concerning Castlebar's businesses. Thanks to Lisa Chambers for facilitating our request for a meeting with the Minister and Dara Calleary for attending. Also present at the meeting were Westport Chamber, Ballina Chamber of Commerce, Irish Hotels Federation Restaurant Association of Ireland nd Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI). I raised the following issues on behalf of Castlebar: 1: The rising cost of doing business. Anne went through a thorough list of rising costs followed by requesting 3 key changes: (a) Significantly reduce employers' PRSI. (b) Review the VAT rate for hospitality, considering a reduction from 13.5% to 9%. (c) Halt the increase in excise duty. 2: Infrastructure and mobility improvement Hiighlighting infrastructure is the backbone of economic development and identified several areas where improvements are urgently needed. The 3 key changes: (a) Prompt action on the development of Knock Airport (b) Advocated for an increase in Dublin airport's passenger cap to 40 million, ensuring better connectivity and flexibility for businesses in Castlebar and across Mayo. (c) Develop the rail network to connect the 3 main ports (Dublin, Rosslare, and Limerick). In conclusion I reminded the Minister that Castlebar and Mayo are primed for increased investment from the international market and highlighted Castlebar's accolades, including winning the best town for work-life balance, several tidy town awards, the Bank of Ireland Rising Star Award, and its reputation as a well-known enterprise town. My message was clear: Castlebar is open for business. The chamber undertook to formally communicate the above to the Minister and his department, and we look forward to his response. #CastlebarChamber #BusinessGrowth #InfrastructureImprovement #Castlebar #MayoInvestmentOpportunities #CommunityEngagement #chamber

If we want the North of England to become a significant gateway for international trade, the region needs to have a more prominent shipping port. I recently shared my view with Insider Media that we are still far too dependent on the southern ports of Felixstowe and Southampton. If we want to be globally competitive, and create a Northern Powerhouse, we also need far better connections between the northern cities. If you want to see what else I had to say, please take a look at my Powerhouse Perspective article: https://lnkd.in/gNGKz6wz

As a proud Bahamian born in Freeport, Grand Bahama 🇧🇸, I am overjoyed and excited 😊🎉 to learn about Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) Director Rupert Hayward's bold proposals 💼📈 regarding the city of Freeport. His comments from an address to the Grand Bahama Business Outlook this past Thursday, sketched out four fundamental pillars 🏛️🔑 crucial to revitalizing Grand Bahama’s main free trade zone. Freeport’s economic impact since 1955 has been driven by its free trade zone status 🔄 and thriving tourism hub 🌴🛳️. Tourism pulls in over a million visitors each year and serves as a crucial contributor to the local economy 💰🌍. To move forward, I believe Freeport must do more to compete 🏁 with newer free trade zones if it wishes to tap into global markets successfully 🌐📊 and attract world-class investors 💼🌟. The modernization of regulations that have governed the area since the 20th century is urgently needed to keep pace with newer free trade zones ⏩📜. There is also a need, and there has been a call, for greater collaboration between the government 🤝 and GBPA. Together, we can! 💪🏽 I believe in a future for Grand Bahama that is inclusive of its Licensees, is collaborative with its international partners and Bahamian Government, and embraces the ideals of real broad-based Bahamian ownership 🌟🤲. In a week when Carnival Corporation revealed plans for a $100 million pier addition on Grand Bahama (part of a larger $600 million investment), we’ve seen what happens when bold, innovative thinking 🚀💡 is given an opportunity. Seeing the positive movement in Grand Bahama comforts me in our decision to domicile Kanoo Pays in Freeport 🏦🌴. It really and truly is up to each one of us to develop, design, and build our collective vision within the best interests of our country 🇧🇸💖. The Bahamas and the people of Freeport are ready to embrace forward-thinking innovation to reach its full potential 🌟. Now is the time! ⌛ I agree with Rupert that with each dollar invested 💵➡️, Freeport will return 10x expectations 💰🔮. With the right vision and support, Freeport will become the jewel of the Caribbean 💎🌊. We have got to get this model right.
