Dear SVSHS ‘64 classmates, Many of you likely have been wondering about the status of a reunion. First, we appreciate the response to the survey that you provided. As we evaluated the responses, we realized that replies came from only about 40 folks. It was also evident that, although there was clustering of data, there was not overwhelming consensus on time of year and length of the reunion. It was also apparent that many of you who live or vacation near other classmates visit with each other periodically, if not regularly. To the extent there was a consensus, it focused on an event in either Rockland County or Bergen County, as all of our reunions have been. However, preliminary inquiries regarding possible venues resulted in the realization that many dates in the time frames respondents preferred were not available and were quite expensive (in terms of transportation/room rates for out of towners and food/entertainment for everybody) for the kind of function most of the respondents preferred. Finally, at least some classmates, including some on the committee believe that our very successful 50th Reunion with its large attendance (including Dr. Sugarman) was a very fitting final reunion. As a result, the committee agreed to abandon our efforts to plan a 60th reunion. Although we realize that this is disappointing to many, we hope everyone understands the decision given the information conveyed by our classmates. But, most importantly, we hope and expect that everyone continues to engage with each other as we have over the years. We also hope everyone enjoys good health and stays safe. Warmly, Jack, Sue, Vic, Paul, Patti, Buzz, Diane, Rich Jack Berg Susan Goodman Byron Vic Gladstone Paul Kurtz Patti Stoll Lazaroff Buzz Ostrowsky Diane Marks Tichi Rich Wiener

S and D Oyster Company Recently, I took my wife, Alice, to the S and D Oyster Company in Dallas. It is one of her favorites and, as such, I always make it part of her birthday month package. As we entered the double front doors, a lady with a big smile and sparkling eyes, held the door for us. (Alice is on a walker for balance and I am recovering from a broken back - so we appreciated the help.) When we were seated it turned out that the same lady (Dina we were to discover) was our waitress. As she came to the table, she had that same warm smile and attitude and she maintained that disposition with prompt, courteous, and competent service during our extended stay. We knew from her welcoming smile that we were going to be well attended, and we were. We told her that her approach to her job personified our book we wrote on great service, particularly the sub-title. “At Your Service - The Faces of Service” Available at https://lnkd.in/eJR2evi Here is info on the book. ——————————— AT YOUR SERVICE - THE FACES OF SERVICE We all know when we get good service and when we get bad service, but how do we achieve Great Service in our business, our clubs, our civic organizations, or wherever? That ‘how’ is the subject of this book written by Alice and Clif Holliday. The material is based on their combined 80 years of providing service in various organizations and circumstances. Real life examples are used to make the points less abstract, and an in-depth ‘how-to’ section is included.

Presenting research at the AEHS West 33rd Annual International Conference on Soil, Water, and Air is an exhilarating opportunity, particularly when it involves groundbreaking work on a topic as critical as the impact of warfare on environmental health. This year, we have the privilege to share our study on the issue of heavy metal soil contamination on Iwo Jima's Invasion Beach, a site of immense historical significance from WWII, renowned for its distinctive black volcanic sand. Our research delves into a largely unexplored area, despite the beach's popularity and the common practice of collecting its sand as war mementos. The core of our investigation focuses on examining the heavy metal composition of the sand and debris through XRF analysis, a technique that promises to shed light on the potential contamination risks these souvenirs may pose. Through a detailed review of existing scientific literature on volcanic sands and the analysis of soil samples from areas affected by war, we aim to provide a thorough understanding of how warfare can leave a lasting mark on soil quality and contribute to contamination. Our study is not just a scientific inquiry; it's a call to action. We underscore the critical need for adopting sustainable and accurate armaments to reduce the ecological impact of warfare. While it may seem a distant goal to eliminate warfare entirely, minimizing its environmental consequences is an urgent and achievable aim. The contemporary context of ongoing conflicts, such as those in Ukraine and Gaza, makes our research not only relevant but vital. We advocate for further exploration into sustainable alternatives, like biodegradable ammunition, to foster environmentally responsible warfare practices. In conclusion, our presentation at the AEHS conference is not merely a dissemination of our findings but a message of the imperative to understand and mitigate the impacts of warfare on soil contamination. It's an exciting platform to highlight the necessity of sustainable practices in preserving our planet for future generations, making this opportunity not only thrilling but deeply meaningful.

How are you marketing your business? Street fairs are great for business. It's not direct ROI tho. It's more about planting the seed in the local community. Once they see you or realize what you do then you stay in there face by doing different events and staying involved in the community.
