As many people predicted, my new portfolio life is already starting to get quite busy... But it's not all totally new. For the last couple of years, I've had the pleasure of supporting the healthcare practice at @saxtonbampfylde, which has given me real insight into the world of executive search. Three key lessons I've found: โ Running a good process needs thought and effort from both client and search firm, it can't all be outsourced. โ Which means as well as the search firm really understanding both client and candidate needs, clients need to think about what they actually want and need from their search firm. And indeed whether using a search firm is actually the right answer every time. โ And as in most things, relationships matter! ETHICAL AND RESPONSIBLE SOURCING Where I understand the nature of recruitment (I was an accountant for a recruitment company in a past life) surely there must be a line where respect comes into play? Sourcing can be a thankless task and it takes drive and persistence from the recruiter. Scouring the internet for as much information you can get on a potential candidate and then the crunch time, getting to actually engage in conversation in order to build that relationship before enticing them away from their current role and into your talent pool. Finding out where a potential candidate works and calling their workplace on the off chance you might get past the receptionist could get you a lucky break.ย But when numerous attempts to make that connection fail, think about the impact you are having on the person on the other end of the call. ย ย When your identity is realized and the calls continue, and rudeness kicks in out of desperation, this becomes HARRASSMENT, time to stop and find a new route! #ethicalsourcing #recruitment #harrassment #nicetobenice #berespectful

Want to test whether a Recruiter you're working with really knows their client? Ask them to describe the culture of the company. Check if they use generic, tried and trusted language that could've just been plucked from anywhere (and unfortunately, often is). Ask if they've made placements previously with that client. Ask what the results of those placements were. Today, more than any other, businesses and recruiters alike are too prone to over selling and over pitching things that simply don't exist. It's the no1 reason for a placement not working out. "It wasn't what I expected". How on earth in 2023 should this be the case!? It's not necessarily always about whether an agency has worked with a business for decades (although that's a good sign), It's about whether they're good enough to do their due diligence, to furnish you with the info you need. AND, whether the business sees them as enough of a partner to divulge said info accurately. Check it all. You don't want to be a pawn in anyone's "just put a bum on a seat" game. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Reflecting on my conversations atย The BTAย โInsightsโ Conference last month in Antwerp, I lost count of how many people asked me โwhatโs happening in the world of business travel recruitment? So, I thought it might be beneficial to share my own โInsightsโ over the next few weeks to my wider LinkedIn audience. Insight No.2: Getting the recruitment process right is vital in this candidate driven market. It can mean the difference between securing the best candidate or losing them to your competitors. If the process is too long and disjointed, the candidate may disengage, and it could reflect negatively on your organisation. Hiring managers need to have this in mind, along with what message is the candidate receiving about the company culture and values even before any interviews have taken place? We have seen a move back towards including a face-to-face stage in the hiring process. This personal, face to face engagement can be crucial in winning hearts and minds and again - ensuring a very positive first impression for the candidate. Those companies that respect the interviewee and cover the cost of attending interviews are also starting off the relationship positively. ๐Recruiters - what did I miss?๐ When people think recruiting is easy - it's because they usually see the tip of the iceberg. Especially in Agency Recruiting - everyone sees the incentive trips โฑ๏ธ the commission ๐ค, and the fun ๐ฅณ. No one realizes the hard work and dedication - from out of office hour screenings to delivering hard conversations and feedback. The hardest part of Recruiting for me is the Emotional Bond. When you have a candidate that you think is perfect for the role, you've screened them, coached them, learnt everything about them and the hiring manager rejects them.
