I'd like to give a shout out and share this post from my dear friend and sometimes collaborator, Somaya Ouazzani of Mimoza Fleur Search. Somaya is a true expert in her field supporting firms and senior individuals with moves in the City. I so admire her commitment to equality, ethics and really helping people to find the right fit. Her post below speaks of the current recruitment market and some of the challenges. Through my work as a coach/trainer/mentor, I see these challenges in a different lens but both of us are passionate about helping lawyers to find their happy places, where they thrive and and can grow into the lawyers and leaders they are meant to become. Issues around confidence and imposter syndrome are real, although they can be dressed up sneakily as something else such as "I don't like what I see from senior management and would never want to be like that", or "I don't want to lose myself or my work life balance" or "I'm not tough enough" or one of many more things. If a person sometimes wonders what "more" might look like, more in terms of promotion, (yes pay), responsibility, leadership/mentoring, then that thing might be for them. It is that time of year where many senior non-partner lawyers and partners are approaching me to ask about the market, partner opportunities, and what their future might look like somewhere different. This demographic of lawyers often has the same asks. They want to know there is something exciting ahead. They want to know the slog will slow down in return for greater responsibility, reward and visibility. They want to be supported to further carve out their own name and have the opportunity to enhance their practice and profile as a market leader. They also, at this key career moment, want to know that values are aligned and longevity in that move is more than possible. The recruitment market has returned to its former glory and appetites for moves and hires is back with law firms more than willing to make punchy offers and ensure reward and responsibility are matched. Focusing on 1) reputationally enhancing hires which offer a proliferation and integration of work (which can be immediate, paced or staggered depending on so many factors), 2) the opportunity to be in a rising tide where everyone in the team and firm are pushing for the same success in an aligned and cohesive way, 3) a culturally sympathetic approach to wellbeing and, 4) respect for autonomy is almost always where answers are found and those super successful moves are brokered. #partnersearch #executivesearch #legalrecruitment

We spend a lot of time discussing opportunities with candidates, which can often involve taking apart preconceived ideas about what working in any particular role might mean at a specific firm. We often have the luxury of both the full picture and the time to discuss the opportunity in more detail with our candidates which includes, where appropriate, rebutting any misplaced assumptions. Understand the firm's practice areas, clients, and culture to align yourself better with its values and be prepared for conversations and interactions. The more you know about the firm you're about to start working at, the more set up for success you'll be. ⌚ Arrive Early: First impressions are always imperative, not only when meeting your new superiors, but also your colleagues working similar roles as yourself. Demonstrate reliability and commitment by arriving early, giving yourself time to familiarize with the office and connect with colleagues before the workday starts. Start rapport building ASAP! ✅ Stay Positive and Confident: Believe in yourself. You got this job for a reason.
