At Borealis, we believe that education of the young generation is a key enabler to drive the transformation towards a more sustainable future. That’s why we’ve honored three impressive student theses, from TGM – Die Schule der Technik, with the Borealis Innovation Awards for the 19th year in a row, to reward innovative ideas supporting a more sustainable future. This year’s theses addressed improving the ecological performance of wiring in electric cars, increasing efficiency and reducing waste in rheometer tests, and optimizing the process for sedimentation in waste treatment plants. Join us in supporting these young innovators in tackling the complex sustainability challenges facing our modern world! #KeepDiscovering

RAE Visiting Professor at University of Manchester & Henry Royce Institute. Former British Ceramic Confederation (manufacturing trade association) Chief Executive.
I ran two workshops yesterday for students, Early Career Researchers and staff at Department of Materials, University of Oxford, Royce at the University of Oxford and Oxford Net Zero. The first covered careers; wide-ranging discussion continued over lunch and several students had 1:1 meetings with me. The second was on policy, regulatory and political issues associated with materials manufacture. This included energy, trade, sustainability and decarbonisation. I shared the recent net zero technology development and cultural change in UK #ceramic and other materials manufacturing industries. Thanks to Lee Brownsword for providing an update for me to include from the recently-published Ceramics UK Decarbonisation Roadmap. I included case studies from different countries on #criticalmaterials and battery gigafactories, and how this links to business strategy and recycling. We had some great questions on the importance of industrial strategy and policy stability, especially in relation to net zero. Many students were interested in the political levers; I think they will be keeping an eye on #SpringBudget2024! Many thanks to Tinka Marquardt, for superb organisation and publicity and to St Edmund Hall for hosting the event. Great discussions too with others in the Zero Institute Leadership Team, especially Robin Morris and Paul Shearing on their work and the link with policy. I value that my Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professorship allows me to teach at all universities in the Henry Royce Institute. This helps many more of the next generation of materials scientists and engineers understand key policy-related areas and some fascinating multi-disciplinary challenges beyond academia where they can make a difference. #RAEngVP #Ceramics #NetZero #EnergyEfficiency #TransformingFoundationIndustries
