On June 5 – 8, the American Institute of Architects held their annual Conference on Architecture and Design in our hometown, Washington DC. Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS led project tours of a newly completed conversion project and of our longtime contributions to DC’s 14th Street and Logan Circle neighborhoods. The AIA Committee on Design, under the leadership of David Greenbaum, FAIA, LEED AP assembled a panel of leading practitioners to learn about and tour 3 office to residential conversions projects. David Haresign FAIA and Ronnie Ali, LEED AP, showcased Park Ford, our award-winning office-to-residential conversion in Alexandria, VA with a presentation on the environmental, economic, community benefits and challenges associated with conversion projects to a sold-out 50-person tour group. Congratulations to fellow practitioners Duncan Lyons, RIBA, LEED AP BD C and Yulia Beltikova, AIA, LEED AP for their respective office-to-residential tours! Bill Bonstra FAIA, LEED AP, organized 2 tours that came out of his recent published Washington on Foot tour guide. He led one tour through the Logan Circle and the Greater 14th Street Historic Districts along with architects Marc Fairbrother FAIA and Eric Colbert AIA. Bill, Marc and Eric provided fascinating insight into the clients, design and entitlements, Overlay zoning, and unique construction of the neighborhoods’ iconic buildings built 30 years after the MLK Riots devastated this area of the city. The tour included notable BHA projects: Studio Theatre, The Aston, Q14, John Wesley AME Church, 5 Logan Circle, culminating over lunch at our studio/retail building at 1728 14th Street, NW. We are grateful for all who assisted us in these tours, and especially to the attendees who generated thoughtful questions and engaging discussions! #AIA24

I really liked the way that they have organized it into these four agendas, or four goals. They have equity embedded in their categorization. I think that helps make it a lot more clear what they’re trying to achieve through that shoreline.” — E.B. Thinking About a Mixed-Use Building? 🤔 Mixed-use design has been around since the 1900s. However, these types of buildings lost their cachet as cars became more common. Over the last two decades, mixed-use projects have made a comeback in Fort Worth – especially those neighborhoods with an emphasis on being pedestrian-friendly. As in the past, the owner of a mixed-use building typically has their medical practice, retail space, or business offices on the first floor with residences above. And in every case, a second floor of boutique apartments is bringing the owner revenue they would not otherwise have. When mixed-use buildings started reappearing, there were no codes for these types of projects. Today, TMA Architects knows every need and requirement for this type of design. We have completed 16 mixed-use projects in Fort Worth. In fact, our architecture firm’s building in the Near Southside is a mixed-use building. If you’re considering a mixed-use building, please contact us for more information 📲 #mixedusedesign #mixedusedevelopment #architect #fortworth #dallas

"It’s a different framework of thinking. It pushes you to do things that you wouldn’t have thought to do. It pushes you to evaluate spaces that you thought you didn’t like to see if you can make them work in a way that you do like. How little can I do to make this work?" Thought-provoking interview with architect Julie Eizenberg on the the importance of retrofitting and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. At SFN we agree that working under heritage constraints can be challenging but one that our team relishes in our commercial and residential construction projects. Often those buildings become your most memorable work. Via: ArchitectureAU #sfnbuild #residentialbuilders #commercialbuilders #heritage #adaptivereuse

Historian of architecture and energy, author of Architecture: From Prehistory to Climate Emergency (Pelican, 2021), trustee of SAHGB
What does good #architecture look like in 2023? Congratulations to all those shortlisted for the #StirlingPrize. Ollie Wainwright makes strong points about their beigeness and narrow geographical range, but this isn't where the main question lies for me. I feel more anxious about the choice of six new-builds, with substantial #EmbodiedCarbon, during a summer when #ClimateEmergency is becoming obvious to the naked eye. When will retrofit and low-embodied carbon architecture come to dominate the awards as we know they need to dominate practice? These are clearly elegant and attractively-detailed buildings, and I'm sure they've taken some good measures on operational energy reduction, but what temperature rise will we see if they represent the ideal we are continuing to hold up to practitioners and clients worldwide? https://lnkd.in/eUNDWVqi

Transforming Architectural Glazing, Fenestration and Facades Through Collaboration: 10 Years Connecting Top Talent, Supporting Businesses and Driving Industry Innovation.
Framework Friday / 69 Park Lane Architects: Aros Architects Glazing Specialists: Structura Have at you LinkedIn, This #FrameworkFriday, we’re celebrating a remarkable transformation in the heart of Croydon, London at 69 Park Lane. Join me in admiring a project that epitomizes the essence of architectural renaissance through glazing innovations. The Vision: 69 Park Lane isn't just a refurbished building; it's a blueprint for future retrofit projects. Aros Architects, Patrick Ryan Associates and Structura have masterfully re-envisioned this landmark building, enhancing its aesthetic appeal while significantly boosting its environmental credentials. Eco-Innovative Design: The project has seen a dramatic improvement in thermal performance, with façade insulation upgraded from 2.25W/m²K to an impressive 1.4W/m²K. This leap in efficiency represents not only a reduction in energy consumption but also an overarching commitment to sustainable building practices. Carbon Conscious Construction: By choosing to retrofit rather than rebuild, the project has saved over 1,400 tonnes of CO2 in embodied carbon. This decision underscores a growing trend in our industry towards responsible construction methods that prioritize the planet. Smart Technology Integration: The introduction of natural ventilation through vertical louvres has enabled mechanical and electrical engineers to specify a more streamlined HVAC system, equipped with localized smart controls and metering. This innovation ensures that the building's climate control is both effective and energy-efficient. Minimal Disruption, Maximum Communication: Undertaking such an extensive refurbishment while the building remained occupied was a formidable challenge. However, thanks to meticulous planning and exceptional communication with tenants and residents, the transition was as seamless as it was successful. The Outcome: Today, 69 Park Lane stands not merely as a structure but as a statement—a testament to the potential of thoughtful retrofitting. It demonstrates how urban spaces can be revitalized to meet contemporary needs while respecting their historical significance and reducing environmental impact. 69 Park Lane—a project where tradition meets innovation to redefine the skyline and green standards of tomorrow. #FrameworkFriday #ArchitecturalGlazing #RetrofitRevolution #SustainableBuilding #GlazingInnovation #Glass #EnvironmentalDesign #UrbanRevival #Facades #FacadeEngineering #Glazing #Architecture #InnovationInGlass #BespokeGlazing

Star Architects: Visionaries Who Shaped London’s Imagination Quinlan Terry, Archigram, Sir John Soane, Sir Christopher Wren, John Nash, Inigo Jones, Sir Edwin Lutyens, and Edward William Mountford—these names resonate with architectural brilliance. They are not just London architects but visionaries and draughtsmen who crafted the city's skyline, beckoned by royalty and ambition. Their work transcends mere construction; it's an art form that requires both visionary creativity and meticulous professionalism. Wren’s St. Paul's Cathedral and Soane’s Bank of England redefined London’s urban identity, while Nash's Regent Street and Jones’s Covent Garden brought elegance and order. Lutyens’s Cenotaph stands as a solemn reminder of sacrifice, contrasting with Archigram’s radical, unbuilt concepts that challenged traditional thinking. Architecture, therefore, is not merely about erecting buildings. It involves a deep understanding of history, context, and the environment, balanced with innovative ideas and precise execution. This blend of artistry and technical expertise is essential to transform visions into reality, ensuring that each structure serves its purpose while enhancing the urban tapestry. Professionalism in architecture is crucial. It ensures that these grand designs are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, safe, and sustainable. It requires rigorous training, adherence to ethical standards, and a commitment to excellence. Without professionalism, the integrity and longevity of our built environment would be compromised. In mapping the stars of London’s architectural heritage, we see that true mastery lies in the seamless integration of art and science, vision and precision. These architects remind us that while architecture may not always be what it appears, its true essence lies in its profound impact on our lives and cities. #StarArchitects #LondonArchitecture #UrbanDesign #ArchitecturalHistory #VisionaryDesign #ArchitecturalMasters #Cityscape #HistoricArchitecture #ArchitecturalProfession #UrbanHeritage
