Our time in Australia has been incredible! Thanks to all the growers who have joined us during the sunny Australian winter. We tackled hills, big trees, and had great discussions about the future of the nut industry. Now, fired up and ready, we look forward to our next challenge: California's harvest season! 🇦🇺🚜

🌿 Sustainable Agriculture: From Booker T. Whatley to Karen Washington 🌱 As #BlackHistoryMonth marches forward, Kilimo Collective continues to shine a spotlight on the #luminaries leading the way in sustainable agriculture. Today, we honor two visionaries whose contributions have sown the seeds for a #greener future and a more #equitable #foodsystem. Historic #Innovator: Booker T. Whatley 📚 Booker T. Whatley, a pioneering advocate for small-scale #farming, laid the groundwork for what would become fundamental components of #sustainable agriculture today: #CommunitySupportedAgriculture (CSA) and the farm-to-table movement. Whatley's forward-thinking principles emphasized the importance of small farmers connecting directly with their communities, advocating for diversified crops, and the economic model of "Pick-Your-Own" farms. His work has inspired a generation of farmers to adopt practices that support both the land and local #economies, proving that #sustainability and #profitability can go hand in hand. Contemporary #Champion: Karen Washington 🌻 Building on Whatley's legacy, Karen Washington, Co-founder of Rise & Root Farm, stands as a towering figure in #foodjustice, #urbanfarming, and #sustainability. Her work in New York has transformed vacant lots into vibrant urban farms and cultivated a community deeply rooted in equity and accessibility to fresh, healthy food. Washington's advocacy extends beyond the fields, challenging #systemic barriers in the food system and #empowering communities to reclaim their right to grow, eat, and celebrate the food that nourishes them. At Kilimo Collective, we are inspired by the dedication of both Whatley and Washington. Their journeys remind us that #sustainableagriculture is not just about the food we grow but about nurturing communities, preserving our #planet, and fostering a fair food system for #all. In celebrating their achievements, we are reminded of the power of #innovative thinking and community engagement in driving the change we wish to see in the world. Let's honor their legacies by supporting #sustainable practices and #foodjustice initiatives in our communities. Honey harvesting has historically been a complex, demanding, untidy, time-consuming, and laborious task. Humans have enjoyed consuming this natural gift at the expense of bees' lives. Particularly in hot and humid climates, beekeepers have faced significant challenges in delivering this valuable golden liquid to consumers. Fortunately, thanks to the ingenuity and efforts of remarkable individuals, a game-changing product has emerged: honey on demand. With a simple turn of a key, honey flows seamlessly into a container, resulting in zero waste and minimal harm to these diligent creatures that work tirelessly to produce this harvest for us. As responsible stewards of nature, we must be mindful when taking their food source. As a guiding principle, I refrain from harvesting during winter and ensure they have sufficient reserves at the end of autumn to sustain their families throughout the winter. Let us never underestimate the power of nature. #savethebees #flowhive #honey #naturesgift

🌱 Happy World Soil Day! 🌍 As a farmer, I'm thinking about how important our soil is today. It's like the superhero of our farms, helping us grow the food we all love. Here are a few things we can do to take care of our soil: Keep it Healthy: Use cool tricks like cover crops and less digging to make our soil super strong. Make Friends with Nature: Plant different things and invite local plants and bugs to the party. It helps keep our soil happy and balanced. Magic Compost: Turn kitchen scraps into food for our soil. It's like giving it a yummy treat! Share What We Know: Let's talk to other farmers and learn from each other. The more we know, the better we can take care of our soil. Tell Everyone: Share with friends and family why it's cool to buy food from farms that take care of the soil. It's like supporting the Earth's A-team! Our soil does a lot for us, so let's promise to be good buddies and keep it healthy. Happy World Soil Day! 🌱🌍 #WorldSoilDay #SimpleFarming #SoilLove #HappySoil

🍎 Octavia Spencer, ahem Mother Nature has taken a toll on the big 🍎 On May 18th, she ushered in a hard freeze just as fruit orchards were beginning to bloom. The loss to crops is said to be the worst regional farmers in NY (the second largest producer of apples in the country) and MA have seen in 40 years. In #berkshires, yield is estimated to be down 75%. Pick-your-own 🍎 at places like the beloved Barlett's Orchard has been canceled to prioritize commercial sales. Note: the cider donuts are not affected, stop by. Addy Farm got lucky. Our higher altitude prevented frost damage. Yesterday, after hitting drops for the deer with a tennis racket and spoiling our cows with treats, my son and I made a spectacular Apple Tartin. #gratitude. Thursday, I am attending the Berkshire Agricultural Ventures inaugural climate-smart agriculture event: Harvesting Hope: Building Climate-Resilient Farms at The Berkshire Botanical Garden Tanja Srebotnjak, PhD and Sara Kelemen are hosting a panel discussion addressing the impact of #climatechange on local agriculture, and the adaptive measures adopted by Berkshire-Taconic farmers Jim Schultz, Meg Bantle, Alison Basdekis. I look forward to learning from your collective knowledge. Look forward to seeing you there: Dan Carr, Jake Levin, Katherine Hand, Matt Brogan, Berkshire Cider Project, Bonnie Stevens, and Rebecca Busansky. Adapting our approach is essential to sustaining local food sources. ------------------------------------------- 🛎 Ring the bell to follow along on all things. Note: There is an ongoing debate on apples making cows tipsy. We practice moderation. #farmlife #consciousleadership #leadershipdevelopment #coaching

Similar to their fellow members of the Solanaceae family (tomatoes and eggplants), red chilies thrive under a shared set of conditions. These warm-season, day-neutral plants demonstrate remarkable adaptability, flourishing across a wide range of altitudes. Rainfall becomes a factor, with red chilies preferring moderate levels (between 600-1250 mm annually) and avoiding waterlogged environments. At Agricado Farms, this in-depth understanding of red chili growing conditions translates into cultivating high-quality chilies. #AgricadoFarms #RedChillies

ℂ𝕙𝕠𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕠𝕟 𝕤𝕖𝕔𝕣𝕖𝕥𝕤, 𝕥𝕚𝕞𝕖 𝕥𝕠 𝕌𝕟𝕧𝕖𝕚𝕝 I am so sorry!! I told you not to tell me your secrets that when I become hungry, I sell them to get food but you wouldn't listen. Every saturday evening I see you, yes you!🫵, eating barbecue 🐟 and chilled chi exotic🧃. I just want to greet you and tell you somethings; 📌 Those "whiskers"? They're called 𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙨, aiding in food location in the catfish. So, the next time you mislabel them, a self-pinch might be in order! 📌 Freshwater fuels their feeding frenzy. Watch how they feed after a water change or during high tides in earthen ponds. 📌 Cannibalistic tendencies: Big ones prey on small ones, while the smaller ones unite to take down the giants. It's a catfish eat catfish world🤣! 📌 Catfish can breathe both dissolved oxygen and atmospheric oxygen. Ever wondered why they still stay alive even when out of water? They have a specialized structure called labyrinth organ. Listening cows eat grasses: Testing hypothesis for #carbon_negative #Swedish #beef and #dairy #production. Follow the playlist around #NaturalExperiments with Sven-Alf Johnny Blom, Chief Farming Scientist, Ljungan Systems Field Station, VakeWorks, Torpshammar, Sweden: https://lnkd.in/dReFeAaH Our main objective here is to identify ongoing natural experiments conducted over the last 5 decades at farms around Ljungan Systems Field Station, collectively comprising of several hundred hectares, in order to #test competing #hypotheses (e.g., Food Climate Research Network report from Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford https://lnkd.in/dtBR2-X2) around #agroecological #practices to make #Swedish #beef and #dairy more #climate_positive (e.g., #carbon accumulation in #soil and #micronutrient distribution in the plant community ecology, #biodiversity surveys of the #pollinating fauna and #subsoil flora and fauna). Specifically, we want to identify practical pathways that will #improve the '#Climate' status of #Swedish_organic (KRAV) and #Pasture_raised (#Svenkt_Sigill "#naturbeteskött") #beef and #dairy products. See the current warnings of the sad Climate ("Klimat") status of these types of production in the meat guide although they fare well for #biodiversity, #chemical_biocides, #animal_welfare and #antibiotics, at WWF https://lnkd.in/dNCSuaVj https://lnkd.in/d8GZKNdJ
