One of the common questions I've heard over the years about Global Medical Brigades is when we will begin our work in a new country. It doesn't happen often. Where and when to expand are comprehensive decisions that take into consideration a multitude of factors. We ask ourselves and prospective community partners questions like: - Is our collaboration scalable beyond medical relief? Will it be possible to tap into and sustain local leadership to promote access to healthcare, public health and water infrastructure, and economic development? - What are the current and potential socioeconomic strengths and challenges at local, national, and regional levels? - What needs are prioritized and requested by prospective partner communities? What resources do we have to offer? Do these align? With our impactful history of sustainable development in Central America, strong local leadership, and high stakeholder interest, communities Belize became an undeniable fit for our program. It's exciting to hear feedback live from volunteers Aaliyah and Maggie from Montclair State University!

California’s Assembly Health Committee, led by Assemblymember Mia Bonta, held a hearing last week focused on diversity in California's health workforce. CHCF Associate Director Kathryn Phillips presented workforce gaps data and shared why a representative workforce improves patients' health care experiences. Among the takeaways shared by Phillips and other partners: 5 of the state’s 9 regions fall below minimum national standards for the supply of primary care providers. 11 million Californians live in a Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area, and 2/3 are Latino/x, Black, or Native American. California has underinvested in health education and training and lacks the capacity to train needed physicians and nurses. Investing in pipeline programs that recruit and support students is key to building a diverse workforce able to meet patients’ needs. https://lnkd.in/gzkBpiAz

Angela Hagaman East Tennessee State University, Craig Henderson, Sam Houston State University, Bettina Hoeppner Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School, and Sierra Castedo de Martell, Chestnut Health Systems regarding important questions about the PRSS/RCC workforce and the role they play within their recovery ecosystems. Such questions include: (1) the specific activities PRSS engage in and in which settings they conduct them, (2) how benefit from services is best operationalized and measured, and (3) the economic valuation of these services.
