One thing to understand about crisis communications: it doesn’t end when the incident is mitigated. Think about your communications strategy with a long-term mindset. Will the incident last an hour, a day, days or weeks? Think about what your message will be if it comes to reunification, resource assistance, healing and your community. And once the emergent messaging is complete, will you have more to say or does it go back to business as usual? Depending on your discipline, your partners may have long-term messages you can amplify. No two incidents are ever the same. But when it comes to large-scale incidents, think long-term from the start, just in case.
