It's fascinating how something as simple as a grapevine can serve as a natural calendar, marking the passage of time with its seasonal changes. Oftentimes, in our home, we find ourselves saying "It's autumn already," guided not by a calendar but by the subtle transformations of our grapevine. Yet, amidst this rhythmic dance with nature, we often overlook the built space that enriches our experience. Here, we are grateful to be living in this space designed in 1970s that seamlessly integrate and amplify this connection. The pergola supporting the vine stands as a silent sentinel, perfectly positioned to enhance our experience of the seasons from both the levels - the first floor as seen in this picture (and the floor below is even more beautiful), reminding us of the symbiotic relationship between built environments and the natural world. In the foreground is a similar analysis of Barcelona Pavilion, illustrating how architectural design fosters an intimate connection with nature. As for my indicator of time, it's the changing colours of the leaves, a gentle reminder of the passage of each day. What's your nature calendar like ?

Interior design is less and less reduced to the mere physical component of space and is instead increasingly projected towards an ‘environmental system’ made up of space, services, communication, and technology. The book highlights the close interconnections between the design of spaces, the creation of services, the application of communication systems, and the exploitation of technologies, allowing us to reveal the tensions and interactions that are unleashed depending on the prevalence of one or another design discipline and the scale at which they take place. Stalinist architectural heritage. Creativity, courage, design. And, truth be told, not exactly in a place recognized for this type of project. Tasked with converting a Soviet-era residential block in the capital of Kazakhstan into a modern café, bakery, and restaurant, the women-led architectural studio NAAW Studio chose to create a playful project transformed into a Scandinavian-inspired restaurant while respecting the original structure. At the inaugural ALIS DESIGN advisory board meeting, the math was simple: Passion Expertise Curiosity = 2024’s must-attend event for all hospitality stakeholders. Leaders from across the industry came together to share their views on the key issues in the industry – and what they want to learn more about. There’s a lot to admire about the creativity and dedication behind hotels, restaurants, spas and cruise ships, but if I had to pick one thing that consistently inspires me about the people behind the projects, it’s their ongoing need and desire to keep learning and growing in their field. Our advisory board members were creating the event of their dreams in real time because they’re still eager to dig deeper and enhance their knowledge – no matter how many awards already sit on their shelves. As the moderator for one of the meeting’s breakout sessions, I got to see their excitement about topics from the blue sky to the granular. Some consider real estate on the back foot. People forget you can generate the most power from the back foot. Rising interest rates and lower commercial tenant occupancy are foreshadowing asset “re-pricing” in the next 24 months. Attendees at EXPO REAL (Messe München) seem to think it will be ~15-30% correction; but manageable for the industry. Real estate and the technology that supports it isn’t going away, and optimally managing through downturns is argueably a better way to create long term value than just focusing on cyclical upswings (usually timing is too late). Exhibitions like Expo Real are so critical for companies to experience the state and zeitgeist of the market, leaders to pull proprietary information from personal conversations, and both to drive forward regardless of market conditions.
