Black artists who are often overlooked… Are you aware of Black artists from the 20th and 21st centuries who are known to art institutions, but are who are not as widely known or celebrated as some of their historical or contemporary peers and are often excluded from mainstream conversations? "For example, Alma Thomas, Jack Whitten, Sam Gilliam, and Frank Bowling are well-deserved citations of the early Black abstractionists, but lesser known to that history, broadly speaking, are Lilian Thomas Burwell, Evangeline “EJ” Montgomery, and Deborah Dancey. While contemporary artists like Kerry James Marshall, Betye Saar, and Faith Ringgold are the founding leaders of contemporary figurative painting and printmaking, the contributions of artists like Malcolm Bailey, Charles Alston, and Camille Billops may not be as widely known or discussed." I learned more about these underrecognized artists by reading an excellent article published in Artsy and written by Maxwell Rabb. Excerpts quoted above - link is in the comments. Our “African Americans and the Arts” Black History Month spotlight for today is Michelle Campbell, admissions advisor for Rasmussen University Online. Q: Tell us about your experiences in the arts: To be a Black woman in this world, there is no part of my existence that is untouched by the arts of my people. Black art is everywhere and nearly all-consuming, from our music and the way that it's infused into so many genres; to our on-screen performances that remind the world of who we are who we've always been; to the books that hold our history and everything in between. That has been my experience since my youth. Searching for and finding representations of myself inside the creativity and genius of Black artists. Q: What does Black History Month mean to you? “Black History Month” is an interesting concept to me. It’s not long enough to encompass all the greatness that Black history entails, but I see it as a reminder for those who may have forgotten and an introduction to those who never knew how vast the spectrum of Black history is. I see this month as a time to reflect and educate oneself on the people whose rich handprints are so deeply embedded into the very fiber of our everyday life. This month is merely a taste of “grandma’s kitchen,” but to fully understand it, you must go beyond the taste and sit down for the actual meal to fully appreciate the people that it calls attention to. #RasPride #BlackHistoryMonth

Give this a like if you've already read some of these books! ❤️ 📚 Embrace the power of literature this Black History Month with these thought-provoking banned books. Banning books, especially those focused on diversity, restricts access to essential perspectives and voices that need to be heard. These stories challenge the status quo, ignite conversations, and shed light on important issues faced by the Black community. 📖 By reading and sharing these banned books, we stand against censorship and champion the importance of diverse voices in our society. Which one will you pick up first?
