On the new episode of the #TEConnectPodcast, we’re discussing #receiptprinter challenges (and how to solve them) with Star Micronics' Kate Orara and Bill Shuff. 🚫 💀 Kate confirms that printing receipts is not dead, nor does she think it will ever be, but that also means that printers must adapt as retailers and their POS systems change. 📶 Interfaces & Connectivity – “Many printers still rely on outdated interfaces,” says Kate. “Rather than the modern options like USB, Bluetooth, or even Wireless LAN.” Bill points out that Star has given that some thought by adding a USB-C “Ultra” connector to their newest printers, providing more flexibility for any need, including iOS & Android devices. ⚡ Tablet Usage—Charging tablets can be complicated, and connectivity and usage can drain the device. Being able to connect and charge it with a printer can make that simpler. 👩💻 Multiple Locations—Managing devices, e-commerce, BOPIS, and similar trends can all add complexity, so connectivity and communication are critical. Bill calls out the essential role SDKs play in helping with printer management. 👉 Peripherals—A POS can include a lot of “stuff.” Star believes the printer can be the central hub for all the devices customers need. “Consolidate the point-of-sale,” says Kate. “Keep the counters clean, make it look nice, make it even better, make it work!” ⭐ Of course, Star has a solution for these problems: their mC-Print3 series of receipt printers, designed for connectivity, easy troubleshooting, fast printing, and longer printhead life. Check out the full episode linked in the comments to learn more! Christin Dorner Amy Hiltibrand David Slocum

QR codes, or quick respond codes were invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara from the Japanese company Denso Wave. They were designed to allow for high-speed scanning and were originally used to track vehicles during manufacturing. QR codes are an example of a 2d or matrix code. Unlike traditional barcodes that only present information linearly, QR codes have the ability to hold information both horizontally and vertically. This allows the code to contain significantly more information. Common uses include displaying text, opening a webpage, adding a vCard, opening a Uniform Resource Identifier or connecting to a wireless network. There are a large number of tools to create QR codes, as well as to read them. While in the past, smart phones would require a special app to read QR codes, most modern smart phones will now read a QR code simply by viewing it through the phone’s camera. QR codes are often used in marketing, making it easy to direct customers to additional information. Other markets that utilize the versatile codes include manufacturing, consumer products and electronics, healthcare, retail and warehouse and distribution. Contact DLS to learn how you can help your customers add QR codes to their labels. And don’t forget to check out next week’s #LabelFactFriday.

Understanding Carrier-Locked vs. Unlocked Phones for Smarter Trading 1. Carrier Locked Phones A carrier-locked phone is tied to a specific mobile network, meaning it can only be used with SIM cards from that carrier. This lock is typically applied when the phone is sold through a network provider at a subsidized price, and the user has a contract with that carrier. These phones remain locked until the user either fulfills the contract or pays a fee to unlock the device. Advantages of selling carrier-locked phones: Lower price for the end consumer (usually subsidized by the carrier). Appeals to customers who are loyal to or tied into contracts with a specific carrier. Disadvantages: Limited resale value since the phone can only be used with one carrier unless unlocked. Less attractive in international markets unless there is a strong presence of the carrier. 2. Carrier Unlocked Phones An unlocked phone is not tied to any carrier, meaning it can be used with any network, as long as the network's technology (GSM/CDMA) is compatible with the phone. Advantages of selling carrier-unlocked phones: Higher resale value: These phones are in demand globally as they can work with any carrier. Flexibility: They appeal to international buyers and those who frequently switch carriers. No long-term contracts: Users are free to choose or change their carrier without any contractual obligations. Disadvantages: They are usually more expensive upfront since they are not subsidized by carriers. Why It Matters in Trade: In wholesale and retail, carrier unlocked phones are generally more popular because they have a broader market. Carrier locked phones are more region- or carrier-specific, so understanding your target market's needs is essential when deciding what type of phones to trade.
