Pregnant and postpartum mothers from Port Huron who traveled to receive treatment from the Flint/Saginaw Odyssey House were a driving force behind expansions to substance use disorder treatment services that already existed in the Port Huron area. In late 2023, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation awarded the Odyssey House a $40,000 grant. Today, the Port Huron Odyssey House provides outpatient and recovery housing with additional services on the horizon. Here's the story behind the expansion and how our Foundation's Community Health Matching Grant Program helps organizations like the Odyssey House address vital needs in Michigan communities: https://miblues.co/4aTa5WV #SubstanceAbuse #SubstanceUseDisorder #PortHuron #BCBSMFoundation

Healing, growing, and thriving for people of color is optimal when it occurs in community. While self-care is important to our well-being, the over-emphasis on these practices often supersedes another form of care integral to sustained healing: community care. Sometimes burnout and lack of money make it difficult for people of color to heal from the harm caused by oppressive systems and institutions. Community care examples range from mutual aid organizations to child care. What are the needs of your community? And what do you need from your community? Discover how you can disrupt dehumanization and create healthy villages at TheMoriahGroup.com #InternationalSelfCareDay #HealGrowThrive #CommunityCare

Caregiving Youth are unique because they help provide care for a family member with a chronic illness, disability, mental health condition, or frailty due to aging. Serious circumstances. This may require them to perform tasks beyond their age and developmental level, such as administering medication, assisting with personal hygiene, or managing household chores outside of normal age-appropriate tasks. As a result, Caregiving Youth experience physical, emotional, or mental stress that is not often seen in other at-risk populations. Acknowledging the strain that caregiving responsibilities place on middle and high school kids is crucial, as recognition and identification of this hidden population are key to creating change. It's equally important to emphasize the role of a support network in their well-being. Children involved in caregiving should have access to resources and assistance, including caregiver coaching, counseling, respite activities, and support groups. #CaregivingYouth 🔦 need to know they are not alone - over 5.4M kids (ages 8-18) in the United States are helping provide care for a family member who lives with them in their home. Our team is working on expanding services and support for these young caregivers everywhere. We can't do it without the help of donors, partners, volunteers, political leaders, and you... Impressive work being done by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and great reporting by Jennifer Ludden of NPR DHS has launched a pilot program is using artificial intelligence to predict who's most likely to land on the streets, so the county can step in to offer help before that happens. They directly call and mail targeted residents to explain how participating in an aid program for 4-6 months with a case manager and granted money of $4000-$6000 can help stabilize their living situation. While the results won't be published until 2026, other areas like San Diego County are taking note of the program. https://lnkd.in/dQTN_7Wm How might local government agencies address SDOH before residents have to interact with the healthcare system? What other parties are in a position to help with monthly expenses like rent, groceries, and utilities? Does DHS's program conflict or further orient towards California Department of Health Care Services CalAIM program? #health #housing #homelessness #ai #rent #groceries #sdoh

Helping FQHCs, public health departments, and other health nonprofits win more grants, gain greater strategic clarity, and meet community needs. Writer. Facilitator. She/her.
Happy Day 2 of National Health Center Week! Did you know that, back in 1965, the Health Center Program started with just two clinics?! Amazingly enough, today there are over 1,400 health centers, which operate more than 14,000 sites nationwide, serving over 30 million low-income individuals in need of comprehensive primary, oral health, and behavioral health care. Today’s #nhcw23 focus is Health Care for People Experiencing Homelessness. Yesterday I mentioned #socialdeterminantsofhealth and the fact that #housing is essential to health. So it should come as no surprise that people who experience #homelessness endure higher rates of chronic and acute disease, behavioral health conditions, and other needs. These are people who are already vulnerable to a wide range of issues, among them poor health, disability, and early death. Health centers often fill the gap in providing care to the unhoused. There are also specific programs and initiatives, such as the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, which work to improve the delivery of healthcare services to people experiencing homelessness. National Health Center Week is a time to honor and celebrate the work being done at Health Care for the Homeless organizations and to advocate for policies that end homelessness by providing comprehensive housing as a basic human right. Can you tag anyone working in a health center or other nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness? I'd love to show them our thanks! #housingisahumanright #sdoh #valuechcs

What a privilege to be able to contribute to the American College of Physicians, position paper "Meeting the Health and Social Needs of America’s Unhoused and Housing-Unstable Populations: A Position Paper from the American College of Physicians", alongside a dedicated group of healthcare experts and professionals. There is no doubt, that stable housing is essential for anyone's wellbeing. Unhoused persons experience unique health challenges and require a health care system and professionals designed to meet their distinct needs. There is an urgent need to educate us about the needs of the unhoused patients as well as making them aware of community and government resources available to these populations. Policymakers must support health professionals in these efforts by support building the data infrastructure needed to facilitate referrals to these resources, supporting research into best practices for caring for these populations, and investing in community-based organization capacity. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services need to implement projects that provide housing supports and targeted medical services to those who are unhoused or are at risk of becoming unhoused. Policy action is needed to address the underlying drivers of homelessness, including a dearth of affordable housing, while also addressing the short-term need for safe shelter now. We need unified policy efforts that prioritize safe and affordable housing for all, and fund programs that seek to meet the health care and shelter needs of unhoused individuals. #populationhealth #homelessness #medicaremedicaid #SDOH #equity Darilyn Moyer, Ryan Mire, Sue Bornstein, MD, MACP, Suja Mathew, Omar Atiq, Hackensack Meridian Health, Avonia Richardson-Miller, EdD, MA, CDE®, Nicole Harris-Hollingsworth, EdD, MCHES, Elizabeth Paskas DNP, MBA, RN, NE-BC, CPXP

“We need to invest in these people who need help,” Bradford added. “If you give them a chance, they’ll surprise you, and they’ll do well.” - David Bradford. This is what David Bradford highlighted on the subject of homelessness. According to a recent article from Read the US News and World Report, ( in the news ) at News AKMI, a new study from the University of Georgia reveals that reducing homelessness by 25% could potentially save around 2,000 lives annually from opioid overdoses, along with hundreds of lives from alcohol and cocaine overdoses. This groundbreaking research highlights the significant impact of homelessness on substance-related deaths, emphasizing the urgent need for effective policies to address both issues. The surge in evictions, particularly following the pandemic, has further exacerbated homelessness, underscoring the critical need for comprehensive solutions. While eviction prevention is crucial, researchers emphasize the importance of addressing underlying housing issues and providing support to vulnerable populations. Ultimately, the study underscores the importance of pragmatic and compassionate policies to address homelessness and substance abuse, emphasizing the need for long-term investments in solutions that prioritize support and assistance for those in need.
