July 1st marks the 157th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, most commonly known as “Canada Day”. For many, this is a time of celebration, but for others, this a time to reflect on the local and global impact of this nation’s existence: What does it mean to be Canadian? As a country with a diverse population, we must stand together to create a future to the benefit of all. We can have gratitude, while understanding that more is required. A country that was founded through colonization must continue to work with and address the harms caused to the original caretakers of this land, while engaging in principled efforts to move forward in a good way for everyone. This is why we believe in the investment of our communities, because it is in our communities where we find resilience, dedication and hope. Together, we can learn, challenge and build a society that celebrates our accomplishments and improves our conditions. Let us use this day not only to celebrate our accomplishments but also to reflect, listen to the voices of those whose stories have been hidden, and learn from their experiences. When we engage with others, different from us, with curiosity and openness, we pave the way towards unity. Reconciliation is an action, and we all can take part. Happy Canada Day! #BlackCanada #CanadaDay #ourhomeonnativeland

I don’t usually post personal things on LinkedIn, but today, as I celebrate Canada Day, I find myself reflecting on this incredible country’s past, present, and future, as well as my family’s place in it. Not many people know this, but I was not born in Canada. My parents immigrated to Canada when I was young, and I watched them make countless sacrifices and work long hours in odd jobs just to get our family by. They did this because they believed in the Canadian dream. I am a living embodiment of that dream. The level of social mobility I have experienced within my relatively short lifetime would have been impossible anywhere else. Regardless of whether someone immigrated 20 years ago or 200, the dream has always been the same. For millions of people, both in-country and abroad, Canada is a beacon of hope—hope for a just and free society, and hope that no matter who you are and where you come from, a better future is possible. I recognize that Canada is not perfect. Like many countries, it has a complex history full of injustice and tragedy. However, we, as a society, have recognized these mistakes and are actively working to do better. Canada has made tremendous progress, and that is the true hallmark of any great nation. I love Canada, but I am also concerned for its future. The freedom and democracy we often take for granted were hard-fought and, if not protected, can easily be lost. The Canadian dream is becoming increasingly out of reach. The values and unity that made this country great are slowly eroding. Nevertheless, like my parents, and generations of Canadians before them, I have hope that a better future is possible. With that, I would like to wish my network a joyful Canada Day and a happy birthday to the greatest country in the world!

Canada needs to change course! An economy built on immigration alone could not be sustainable. We need to develope a Canadian-based economic system that includes: natural resources, industrial production, innovation, construction, infrastructure, Canadian Aerospace and Canadian automotive. Why is Government subsidizing the foreign automotive industry? They come they take and they leave, Aren’t we able to design and build a Canadian automobile for export to other countries? With all the subsidies offered to Stellantis, Wolksvagen and Honda we could have built a state-of-the-art mega factory ourselves to manufacture an all Canadian EV, We have enormous potential in the Aerospace industry Why are we allowing foreign investors to buy the Bombardier C series when Canadians taxpayers contributed to the development of such beautiful aircraft? Hopefully a new leadership in government will keep some of these ideas in mind.

On June 21st, Canada celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day, honoring the rich cultures, contributions, and histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. This day, and every day, is a time to recognize the diverse cultures, unique traditions, and significant contributions of Indigenous peoples to Canadian society. Communities across Canada come alive with traditional music, dance performances, art exhibitions, storytelling, and cultural workshops, offering everyone a chance to experience and appreciate Indigenous cultures firsthand. These events also raise awareness about Indigenous histories and contemporary issues, promoting understanding and reconciliation. One beautiful flower with remarkable features and properties is the Gaillardia (Blanket Flower). Known for its vibrant colors and resilience, it symbolizes strength and beauty and has been used for its medicinal properties, highlighting the deep knowledge Indigenous peoples have about native plants. The Blanket Flower thrives in diverse environments and supports local ecosystems by attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. This reflects Indigenous values of living in harmony with nature. Just as the Blanket Flower endures harsh conditions, Indigenous peoples have shown remarkable resilience in the face of historical and ongoing challenges. Understanding and appreciating Indigenous cultural celebrations and natural heritage is crucial for fostering harmony. It's our responsibility to educate ourselves and others about Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues. Sharing this knowledge promotes understanding and respect. By celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day and appreciating native plants like Gaillardia, we contribute to a more inclusive, respectful, and harmonious society. #indigenouspeople #togetherness #canada #gaillardia

THE AGE OLD NARRATIVE EMPLOYED/EXPOUNDED BY MANY THAT..... "QUEBEC IS UNIQUE".....IS AN ABSOLUTELY MISGUIDED CONCEPT. There is no factual historical basis in support thereof. ALL territories in the world are unique unto themselves. Every Province and Territory in Canada is unique. All languages in Canada are also unique and in need of Federal protection. All cultures are unique. Are Acadians/Inuit/First Nations/Manitoban Metis/Newfoundlanders/Prince Edward Islanders/Albertans/British Columbians/,etc...etc... for example, not also unique ? Of course they are ! We all are. Thus, All are special and unique. The all important fact remains that: ***WE ARE ONE NATION, UNITED BY CONFEDERATION, 1867.*** Let us conduct ourselves accordingly. Let us be just...Canadians.

What did Canada Day used to be known as pre-1983? Today, July 1st, marks the anniversary of Canada’s confederation in 1867 when three British colonies - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (later to become Ontario and Quebec) - united to form the 'Dominion of Canada'. Originally called ‘Dominion Day’, the holiday was renamed as ‘Canada Day’ in 1982, seen as a modern shift away from colonial-era terminology. The interesting difference between a ‘colony’ and a ‘dominion’ is that the latter has attained a degree of self-governance whilst remaining loyal - in this instance - to the ethos of the British family, or Crown. Functions of the Crown in the Dominions are not undertaken personally by the sovereign but by a governor-general, appointed by the sovereign (Oxford University Press). Mary Simon is the current governor general of Canada, and is the first Indigenous appointment to the role. She became the 30th governor general of Canada on 26th July 2021. CELEBRATIONS As with many celebrations around the world, fireworks play a central role, with people gathering in parks and waterfronts across the country to see the night skies light up. Many Canadians dress in the national colours of red & white, attending parties and cultural activities, which may include historical reenactments (Halifax) or Indigenous ceremonies (Winnipeg). According to website ‘Ramblyn Jazz’, the day brings mixed feelings amongst Indigenous cultures, due to historical injustices. Though Indigenous communities frequently do use the day to showcase their cultures and contributions to Canadian life. In Montreal, where I spent two-years, this year’s main event will be a family focussed affair in the Old Port of Montreal, which is a fun and vibrant part of the city, full of bars, restaurants and a zip wire for those feeling more daring. In addition to the main celebrations at the Old Port, various Montreal neighbourhoods organise their own Canada Day events. For example, Pierrefonds-Roxboro on the opposite shore of Montreal island, hosts a parade, amusement park, and fireworks. Every Destination Has A Story… #canadaday #exploretheworld #storytelling #travel

Canada’s inclusive policies and multicultural ethos have created a society where diversity is not only accepted but celebrated. Commitment to Social Justice and Equality Canada is globally recognized for its commitment to social justice and equality. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees fundamental rights and freedoms for all citizens, reinforcing the nation's dedication to democracy, justice, and human rights. Education and Innovation Canada is home to some of the world's leading universities and research institutions. The country's emphasis on high-quality education and cutting-edge research has fostered innovation and technological advancement. Canadian scientists and entrepreneurs are making significant contributions in fields such as healthcare, environmental science, and artificial intelligence. This commitment to education and innovation ensures that Canada remains competitive in the global arena.
