This week, BKV Group was honored to have Minnesota Senator, Tina Smith, and the USDA Undersecretary, Basil Gooden, visit the BKV-designed Howard Lake Library, the Midwest's first Net Zero library. Said Senator Smith, "Libraries are the heart of many communities — providing a place for learning, gathering, and connecting. With local, state, and federal funding, Howard Lake will be able to build an expanded, more accessible library the whole community will be able to enjoy." With total completion expected this July, we are excited to share more with you come summer!

On Saturday morning I couldn’t stop thinking about some of the possibilities for turning local trash into valuable and useful resources. You see, it began last May when I fell down the glass rabbit hole which resulted in a three-pronged method we’re implementing at Let's Build a Community to divert Spokane County’s glass waste from being landfilled and used locally for a variety of resources. But it’s not just about glass— it’s so much more than that! The possibilities are endless. The truism “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is a simple yet powerful antidote to our struggles with resource management. Every time I learn something new about how a waste product is being reimagined as a resource, I try to puzzle out how it might fit into the grand scheme of our community here in the inland northwest. The two latest possibilities I’ve been learning more about are coffee chaf and black soldier fly larva. Crazy, right? But it’s all connected. And that’s what led to me create this initial diagram on a Saturday morning FOR FUN. I think it would make the professors who taught me cell biology and biochemistry proud (thank you, Drs. Mark Larson, Seasson Vitiello, & Pasquale Manzerra!) I will probably create separate diagrams for different waste/resource streams, but I’m pretty pleased with how my first draft turned out. Stay nerdy, my friends! 🤣😄 #inlandnw #spokanewa #trashtotreasure #communitybuilding #resourcemanagement

How will we prepare for a future with less water and more people in the West? How do we protect our local food systems, farmers and farmland, and our rivers and streams, as cities grow? The Palmer Land Conservancy is working on this challenge in Pueblo County, Colorado, and the plan they've developed with the community there is promising. Impact Post 2: My philosophy studies in college taught me to look at the drive behind everything the why, what, and how, but it was only after years of learning and maturing that I really started questioning the true meaning of success in our society. Everyone talks EBITDA, revenues, head counts and other economic drivers. I've started tracking our "Impact Score". I've discovered that the most profound impact and highest score we can attain comes from aligning our work with our values. It's about asking, "How can I use my company to make the world a better place?" and "How do I create an impact that resonates?" We made a hardcore decision to incorporate a certain percentage of our project base towards non-profit orgs. Places of Impact that needed high quality support. We didn't do this to target a new profit center but rather a new impact center. We've recently had the honor of partnering with an incredible organization dedicated to conservation efforts: All Florida, (https://lnkd.in/eJiGz8Sz) a org that focuses on bridging the gap between on a variety of orgs and gov entities to affect real change for my home State. This current initiative on the endangered Snail kite was a huge success as they are a key wetlands indicator species in the Everglades. Through our collaboration, we've helped to revamp digital brand voice and website, not just to elevate their online presence, but to amplify their mission, to further their impact. I invite you to watch the video, see the incredible work being done, and join us in this journey of making an impact, one project at a time. Because at the end of the day, it's not just about what we build but about what we leave behind. 🚀🌍 Watch HERE: https://lnkd.in/eCsqxthM #impact #Conservation #SoftwareForGood #SnailKite #TechForACause

🌾 Let's talk about food insecurity in Native American communities and the intersection of food security, structural inequality, and environmental changes. 🛤️ Native American households experience food insecurity at higher rate than other households. 📉 Historical policies and displacement have disrupted food systems, often leading to higher food prices and poor health outcomes. 💸 As a part of the Community Engineering Corps we partner with Native Nations to combat these challenges. The University of Arizona Student Chapter's work with the San Carlos Apache Tribe and Nalwoodi Denzhone Community is helping improve local food systems and infrastructure. 🌱💧 Learn more about our efforts and how you can help at ewb-usa.org/climate.
