"Our health data infrastructure is fragmented, siloed and difficult to access. The UK should make two big investments to make sure the NHS is ready for the AI era: ➡️ A digital health record for every citizen. ➡️ A national data trust to lead health data R&D." This observation by Dr Charlotte Refsum, Director of Health Policy at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, was just one of a number of innovative policy ideas addressing how digital and data can transform healthcare. These were debated as part of the “Reimagining Healthcare” session at today’s Future of Britain Conference, exploring governing in the age of AI. John-Arne Røttingen from the Wellcome Trust also spoke about the UK’s comparative advantage (in contrast with much of Europe and the US) in integrating administrative data, population health & cohorting, and lab data, enabling it to pivot towards a prevention-focused, sustainable health system. BJSS Head of Health & Life Sciences Tom Mellor added: "It was refreshing to hear leaders in the Healthcare sector talking about the opportunity for technology and data to transform healthcare, while being both realistic about the challenges faced, and pragmatic about the need to first get the basics right. Over the past nearly 15 years, BJSS has worked at the forefront of technology innovation in healthcare - from rebuilding the Spine, designing the NHS App, to developing a revolutionary, award-winning AI tool to transform IVF outcomes." I heard Tony Blair on Radio 4 this morning and it was like music to my ears. Having worked on several NHS projects whilst with BJSS:Sparck it has been so interesting observing and shaping how design, innovation and technology can help serve patient outcomes, and also the people delivering them. Sharing data for good is a really interesting topic and I found when conducting user research that many people are open to sharing their data if there is trust in the products and services they are engaging with. Key to this is designing transparency into the services people engage with so they are very clear why they would make a choice to share their health data / records. And then underpinning that transparency with governance and a great user experience. And when you see the amazing results on projects like Care Fertility above it is evident where innovation and AI can really be transformative.
