I love being a dad. It could be really hard sometimes, and some kids are definitely more challenging than others. That doesn't mean less loved, but definitely more challenging, and in some cases more emotionally draining. I know in today's hypersensitive culture this is not PC to say, but it's true. Parent support and training is an important part of what many behavior analysts do. When we help identify goals, develop support plans, and engage with families, it's important to remember their role is not that of a therapist. They are a parent who needs support. If you're providing home supports and the house is a mess, if families are frustrated, or someone comes to the door not fully clothed (it's usually the kid, but not always), think about how they got to the point of letting someone into their house under those conditions. Don't presume laziness or people with lower standards. It's people doing their best. They didn't think this would be their life, and it could be you one day. Help them through the way you'd want someone to do for you. Bring advice. Bring compassion, bring encouragement. Don't bring judgment.
