🌟 Creative Minds at Work 🌟 I recently had the privilege of conducting a 3-hour session on Creative Problem Solving for the newly joined design students at Jaipur School of Design, JECRC University University, Jaipur. With 120 enthusiastic participants, the session was nothing short of exhilarating! Believing that creativity is the only currency they have for a bright future, we delved into the heart of what it means to think outside the box (literally). The students engaged in lively brainstorming sessions, generating instant, impressive ideas. Our main activity, 'Joining the Dots,' emphasized the critical skill of connecting disparate ideas to form innovative solutions. In today's fast-paced world, the ability to see connections between seemingly unrelated concepts is more important than ever. It enables us to solve complex problems, adapt to new challenges, and stay ahead in a constantly evolving landscape. The students' energy and creativity were inspiring, and their instant ideas during brainstorming sessions were truly remarkable. The roller coaster ride of IDC School of Design founder Prof. Sudhakar Nadkarni. I have just finished a book called THE DESIGN JOURNEY. It’s an amazing interview of Prof. Sudhakar Nadkarni by Mandar Rane. Prof. Sudhakar has initiated 3 major institutions in India. 🏛 The famous Industrial Design Centre (IDC) at IIT Bombay in 1969. 🏛 The Department of Design at IIT Guwahati in 1997. 🏛 An MBA in Business Design at Welingkar Institute Mumbai in 2003. What else can someone do in a lifetime? I have had this book since 2017 but couldn’t get a chance to read it. But finally I got the time. And I surely enjoyed that time reading this amazing book. It’s a meticulously designed book. The pages’ quality, the layout, photos, even the fonts shows a top-notch craftsmanship at its best. It also reminded another phenomenal book The Elements of Typographic Style by none other than the master himself Robert Bringhurst. On top of that I always read things about western designers but didn't know anything about my own. So it was a rare find. Also I always feel proud and connected whenever I see an Indian doing great whether it’s 🇮🇳 Devdutt Pattanaik on Ted 🇮🇳 Naval Ravikant on Joe Rogan Experience or even 🇮🇳 Russell Peters on Netflix My nationalism starts kicking. I was also amazed by the effort people have put into making this book possible. Because these types of books don't usually find a lot of readers. So it would surely be an effort to show their homage to the Professor. The only thing which I missed was not getting something concrete. When you read such legends you always crave for more. So I was hoping to get some kind of frameworks, strategies, or systems like 💡 Design Thinking 💡 Double Diamond Model 💡 Google Design Sprints to further improve myself. But other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. And at the end of the day I can only say some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. #Update Good Design is Excellent Business! But the role of Designers is still controversial :). Here's why... Recently I was invited to IIAD - Indian Institute of Art & Design to speak/discuss on Design & it's social impact. My primary input was that Design is one of the best professions to have a social impact. Not only in terms of the impact it can have on the lives of the under-privileged but on the lives of everyone who touches good design, including Businesses. But the controversial part of my input was that it will remain undervalued till it is clubbed with Art, and thats why Design is being confused with Styling. I described how i categorise professional buckets. ( For the record, I understand the world is complex and many professions are there etc. etc. but allow me this over-simplifcation :) ) • Art: Loyalty to ones self and ones own expression. Un-criticisable. You have a bad artist but never bad art :). • Management: Loyalty towards numbers, statistics and graphs. • Scientists: Loyalty towards pure science, raw material, natural resources and not the application of science • Engineers & Doctors: Application of science to achieve a result And then comes • Designers: Loyalty to others, their needs & problems & never them-self. *Note: This is why Design is the opposite of Art. A good designer will ensure all the above disciplines come together to satisfy or solve for his target audience. Usability and Empathy lie central to their work. Designers are the ones who have the mandate & loyalty to deliver people centric business solutions in a world that's recognising the power of design thinking. India is yet to fully fathom the contribution of these Individuals in all aspects of Life, Governance, Industry, Business, Society and Strategy. Hello everyone!! I am excited to share the news that our team, comprised of Oosheen Tanya and myself, has emerged victorious in the Dsource Ekalpa India D'source DIC-BHU SDGs Design Challenge B, 2023, specifically in the “Narrative Design” category! 🏆 This prestigious international competition is a collaborative effort by D'source, the Ministry of Human Resources & Development (MHRD, GOI), IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay, School of Design- Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, the Department of Design- Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Design Innovation Centre- Banaras Hindu University, Cumulus Systems, and Designindia Magazine. This Design challenge involved creating a fictional illustrated storybook for children age range of 3-10, addressing issues related to any of the latter 8 SDGs by the UN. We focused on Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Our solution, titled “Duggu, JOJO, and the Mysterious Smell,” storybook delivers a powerful message about how our consumption, driven by wants rather than needs, contributes to environmental issues, resulting in massive piles of garbage. Following the Design Process, we conducted primary research that drew attention to a news report about the garbage mountain in Delhi’s Ghazipur. This revelation prompted us to reconsider our perspective, recognizing that the situation stems from collective actions driven by habits of over-consumption. We delved into Child Psychology, engaging with kids, teachers and parents to understand their comprehension of Sustainable consumption. Multiple iterations in storyline, characters, characteristics of characters, finalizing the illustration style, and creating visually balanced frames were crucial steps. Adopting the Hero's Journey structure added suspense and excitement, contributing to the final impactful look. The story aims to address this critical issue and raise awareness to encourage responsible and sustainable consumption practices.🌱♻️ While the story is crafted for kids, its message resonates universally.
