DID YOU KNOW the United States is considered the worst place to give birth among high-income nations? And that Black women in particular are much more likely to die from childbirth or suffer life-threatening complications. In Texas alone, which is responsible for 1 in 10 of the nation’s births, a 2022 report found that Black women there are twice as likely to die as their White peers. The report also found that aspiring Black parents are at even greater risk of experiencing serious complications during childbirth, with a disproportionate burden of close calls. And yet, the report found that #90%ofDeathsArePreventable How can any country, who expends so much hot air arguing about the politics of nonsense, allow this to happen? #simplyunacceptable

In the United States, women who give birth are dying at higher rates than in other high-income countries – and these deaths are largely preventable. Black birthing women have a 33% higher risk at dying due to maternal health issues. Systemic inequalities are just one factor to blame. When women don’t have access to adequate and safe housing, difficulty getting to postpartum check ups, and difficulty getting nutritious food, they fall to a greater risk. One way to help combat this is to bring awareness to the issue and support the role of doulas and midwives in the birth story of Black women. With their support, Black women are more likely to have a positive birthing experience. GWHI supports the advocacy of doulas and midwives in the birthing process. The #Betterbirth project is aimed primarily at BIPOC doulas to bridge the educational gap and help more birthing moms get the postnatal care and follow up they deserve. Help support our project. buff.ly/42nY47w

Every mother deserves a safe and healthy pregnancy, yet the reality is starkly different for Black women and birthing parents. Statistics show they are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. This alarming disparity highlights the urgent need for advocacy and support for Black mothers. It's not just about physical health but also mental well-being. By raising our voices, challenging systemic inequalities, and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all mothers of every race, we can create a safer, healthier, and more equitable spaces for Black people to bring life into this world. #blackmaternalhealthweek #bipochealthmonth
