🌱 Personal Reflections: My Journey Towards Sustainability 🌍 As I reflect on my journey, I can't help but trace my passion for sustainability back to my childhood days spent exploring nature in my backyard garden. Those experiences instilled in me a deep reverence for the environment and a desire to protect it. Throughout my academic pursuits at Zayed University, my understanding of sustainability has evolved beyond just environmental preservation. I've come to see sustainability as a holistic approach to addressing interconnected social, economic, and environmental challenges facing our planet. What drives me is the belief that we have a collective responsibility to create a more sustainable future for all. Whether it's advocating for renewable energy, promoting sustainable consumption, or addressing social inequalities exacerbated by climate change, I'm committed to being part of the solution. My hope is to leverage my education and passion for sustainability to make a tangible difference in the world. I aspire to collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations to drive positive change and create a more equitable and resilient future for generations to come. The Textile heritage of the Alps tackling climate change! AlpTextyles’ Research Day, scheduled for Tuesday, 12 March 2024, is set to showcase consumer insights, industry best practices, and community experiences aimed at driving circularity and more sustainable lifestyles. “The Living Textile Heritage of the Alps” event marks a significant milestone: it celebrates AlpTextyles’ first year of dedicated research work and findings about the Alpine textile market and value chains. The event promises to be an immersive experience with networking opportunities and creative thinking. Participants will have the chance to engage with leading experts on a variety of topics, exploring the mappings of once missing steps of the value chains and the growing revalorization of local resources at the cultural, industrial, and policy making levels. ARE DISASTERS THE ONLY WAY TO CLIMATE ACTION? It would unfortunately seem so according to respondents.. 45% of Swedes view a catastrophe-driven climate situation as a lever to meaningful action and collaboration. Only 12% indicated that they found the scenario undesirable. Because of a lack of #visions, we put together 12 sustainability scenarios and asked over 1000 Swedes to what extent they found the scenarios possible and desirable. We also asked them to express their thoughts on each one. This led to some very interesting results. Today, you can read more about one of the scenarios deemed the most likely to occur by Swedes: a world where climate catastrophes lead to increased collaborative action. In our pursuit of progress and development, it's easy to overlook the finite nature of our Earth's resources. We often behave as if there's an unlimited supply, forgetting that we have a collective responsibility to preserve our planet for future generations. Being in nature sparks our creativity and motivates us to come up with truly innovative ideas to intertwine innovation with environmental responsibility.  We created a unique and innovative concept that contributes to a more sustainable preservation of our glaciers and help to prevent their melting due to the impact of global warming. To preserve snow and ice on glaciers often geotextiles made from fossil-based fibers are used. As a consequence, this allows microplastics to enter the valley via streams and may enter the food chain through small organisms and animals.  Nonwovens made from cellulosic LENZING™ fibers have proven to be an environmentally-friendly alternative considering that they are biodegradable in soil, fresh water & marine based conditions. Through a pilot project on the Stubai Glacier in Austria, a research team was able to prevent four meters of ice from melting with the geotextiles made with LENZING™ fibers. In collaboration with a network of dedicated and forward-thinking partners, our team is currently in the project´s prototype phase of exploring the transformation of geotextiles into innovative textile fibers, with the aim of repurposing them into garments. This endeavor represents our commitment to sustainability and circularity, as we pioneer the evolution of nonwoven applications into the realm of fashion textiles. It really does take a village to protect a glacier. Munich Circular Economy Wake-Up Call Despite my wishful thinking, Munich is not yet a circular city! 👎🏼 According to the Circularity Gap Report Munich, we have some work to do for our beautiful area: 👉🏼 Linear Economy Blues: In 2019, Munich devoured a staggering 47 million tonnes of virgin materials. That breaks down to 32 tonnes per resident, contributing to a hefty 23 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e). Shockingly, these numbers soar above national, EU, and global averages. 👉🏼 Unsustainable Consumption: Munich's material footprint is four times higher than the suggested 'sustainable' level of 8 tonnes per capita. As if that's not enough, the carbon footprint is ten times higher than the global 2030 target to limit global warming to 1.5-degrees. Sounds horrible? Time for Change! 🌬 Let's roll up our sleeves, work hard, and transform Munich into a circular economy frontrunner. Do you share the same goal?
