Focus on the CoreTeam 2023 - 20/21 Gesine Hentschel "Within the scope of my PhD project, I develop a multiphase blood subsitute fluid, which is able to model age-related and pathological rheological and mechanical properties. The fluid should be compatible with different imaging techniques and therefore serve as a basis for the validation of numerical simulations of blood flow. I joined the CoreTeam in 2022 and support the team with planning the pitch session and the new webinar series. I am looking forward to see all of you at yESAO 2023!"

Very curious about new AFM technology from Oxford Instruments Asylum Research Inc. - interestingly focused on Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) as one of the first use cases. PFM tells us a lot of the strength of polar coupling, electrochemical dipoles, polarization, surface flexo-electricity, and symmetry breaking phenomena associated with emergence of polar behaviors. It also has a signal generation mechanism that is complementary to the classical force- and current based SPMs, and is quantitative at the level of tip- surface junction. In 2007, we posed that PFM can become a key tool to explore ferroelectrics, biosystems, and low dimensional materials (ended up prescient on this one - given all the work on ferroelectricity in twisted bilayers and 2D materials now). https://lnkd.in/gDPU2CvD Based on this logic, we also realized electrochemical strain microscopy in 2010 with Nina Balke and developed a range of theoretical models with Anna Morozovska and her team in Kiev. However, the problem of PFM since it's inception was that all of these signals are coupled together and measured with large (and unknown) systematic error. Coupling can be addressed via a number of strategies (materials control, indentation force, etc), but systematic errors associated with beam deflection in conventional AFMs makes it impractical to explore. If indeed measurements become much more quantitative, it will be a new era in the PFM as a method - with a much broader range of materials and chemistry problems it can solve, and need for theory and modeling development to match. Looking forward to learning more from Roger Proksch , F. Ted Limpoco , and the rest of the Asylum crowd about this technology!
