"𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬' 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐀 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 Portugal is known for its rich history and charming landscapes, but it faces increasing challenges connected to hydric management, specially within building context. The scarcity of hydric resources and climate changes introduce additional pressure on the need to adopt more sustainable practices in the building industry, including the use of water in the buildings. Now, in this regard and to celebrate the World Water Day, the Agência para a Energia - ADENE (Energy Agency), while pursuing a crucial role in fostering these practices with the production of basic and framework directives for the industry, released the AQUA Escritórios - an hydric efficiency assessment methodology for buildings and offices". Workers in the construction sector hold a range of skills and expertise which will be essential for the era of sustainability that must, ultimately, lie ahead. BUT we need to ensure that the sector retains and develops talent. #Construction #Sustainability #BuiltEnvironment
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has published a sustainability guide for built environment professionals. It covers topics including sustainability development goals, green financing, embodied and operational carbon, biodiversity and social value. Amanda Williams MIEMA CEnv, CIOB's head of environmental sustainability, said the guide is "an essential reading for construction professionals": "The construction industry has a vital role to play in responding to the twin challenge of climate change and biodiversity loss. We must harness all the skill and ingenuity of the sector, as we aim to ensure that the projects we deliver today make a positive contribution to the kind of future we want to see." #CIOB #Sustainability #BuiltEnvironment #Construction

There is no time to wait, now is the time to act! 🏢♻️ Growing and developing cities require more construction. This in turn requires a lot of energy and mineral resources to construct, operate and renovate buildings. The construction sector also generates waste and emissions. Europe's Green Deal programme commits stakeholders in the built environment to work together to tackle these problems. But how can we actually do this? Sami Lankiniemi from Sitowise and Juha Laurila from Rakennusteollisuus RT emphasise that it's high time for the built environment sector to find new ways of thinking. 💡 #LocationInnovationSpotlight #builtenvironment #greendeal #biodiversity

World Habitat Day passed last month, and the theme this year revolved around cities and their responsibilities to drive the growth and recovery of urban economies. 🌍 This has sparked a conversation with Ctori, and one that we feel very passionate about. At Ctori, we always strive to be environmentally conscious as a business, as well as support our clients in adopting sustainable practices through our efficient solutions. The construction industry accounts for 38% of global carbon emissions. As a company that lies in this sector, we endeavour to minimise our contribution to this staggering statistic. Sustainability is a key influence in how we operate, enabling the modern world of construction to make a greater contribution to a greener future.

In a new report unveiled in Canberra today, the Property Council of Australia and GBCA are calling for sustainability driven planning incentives and reforms. Titled, 'Every Building Counts: for state and territory governments', the report outlines a series of policy recommendations centred on property that can help Australia reach its decarbonisation goals. Green Building Council of Australia CEO Davina Rooney said the report outlined the need for long-term strategies for zero-carbon-ready buildings and homes, and that governments must turbocharge the shift to high-performance sustainable buildings and homes. “Incentives have the potential to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient and distributed technologies in both new and existing buildings," Ms Rooney said. We have a huge amount of building stock we need to find more innovative and creative ways to repurpose and improve ... rather than continually replacing with short-term, poorly designed and constructed approaches. HomeBuilder was a totally wasted opportunity that we're still dealing with the consequences of (and frankly will for decades, given the building stock it rapidly injected into the built environment). Incentivising sustainable new construction, renovations and retrofits is a much better use of taxpayer funds IMO. (And can we please start with ensuring subdivisions are required to create appropriately oriented sites?)
