There was a 15% increase in the number of law enforcement fatalities during the first half of 2024, compared to the same time last year. Based on a preliminary report from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 71 officers died in the line of duty during the first six months of this year, versus 62 last year. Firearms-related deaths rose 8% over last year (28 versus 26), and traffic-related deaths soared by 136% (26 versus 11). Great start. But spotting the signs is only stage one. Having the trusted relationship with the young person to be able to have the difficult conversation is the next stage. Then being in it for the long haul and being consistent is crucial. Finally knowing how to help them when they ask. Many of the young people we spoke to in our study were let down time and time again when they asked for help. We can spot the signs but we need to do some serious work around getting young people the help they need to escape their exploiters.
