This summer's latest hot topic has shifted from GenAI to the crucial areas of #testing and #reliability, especially in light of the recent #CrowdStrike outage that impacted over 8 million #Microsoft devices globally. The past 24 hours have seen quite a bit of criticism aimed at CrowdStrike. This incident brings to mind Ray Dalio's principle: "Create a Culture in Which It Is Okay to Make Mistakes and Unacceptable Not to Learn from Them." One of the possibility why would CrowdStrike could not find the bug which could be reproduced in 2 minutes and converted uncounted devices to unrepairable without physical repair. Microsoft paying -> Crowdstrike ($100M/Year) -> Immedidate Vendor ($50M) -> Other Known Vendor ($25M / Year) -> Shadow Vendor ($10M/Year) -> Other Vendor ($5M/Year) -> Other shadow vendor ($1M/Year) -> Partner vendor ($500K/Year) -> Shadow vendor ($200K/Year) So it is fine to have this bug by team of skills worth $200K/Year. This is also an excellent example of assuming code will always work, no need to test. Numbers are imaginary. #CrowdStrike #Microsoft #GlobalOutage

The CrowdStrike/Microsoft outage hit home today as my daughter’s flight was cancelled by the airline today with no alternative offerings. Initial thoughts: While not inherently a SaaS problem, trust in SaaS systems may have just gone back 10 years. Competition is good. Increased competition in the software industry mitigates societal upheaval when things go wrong. Vendor dominance puts everyone at risk. The importance of basic QA. It’s what everyone is thinking. Crowdstrike is going to have to answer how a content update which killed all these production systems passed all their quality gates undetected. #crowdstrike #outage #crowdstrikeoutage
