Independence day
I can now say I am no longer the ‘new’ CEO of BIBA as 4th July marks one year in the role.
It was an honour to pick up the BIBA baton, I set out to create new allyships, invest in members and help them navigate current and future broking challenges and opportunities.
I look back at my first year as a period when brokers had to face up to many challenges: threats to ban commission; reducing capacity; a very difficult economy; new regulation; difficulties in recruitment; and of course now – a general election!
But we learn from adversity and my highlights of the year include:
> Our intensive work on the Financial Services and Markets Act through every stage of the parliamentary process, that contributed towards the new growth and competitiveness objective for the FCA.
> Fending off the Government’s threat to ban commission with our new Oxera Fair Value Assessment Framework for members, the broker pledge on multi-occupancy buildings & the work with the ABI to introduce the new McGill Fire Safety Reinsurance Facility.
> Our new Premium Finance Guide for members, along with guides on claims, ransomware & the value of commission.
> Increasing signposting enquiries to members via our Find Insurance Service by 40%.
> Our new and constructive engagement with the FCA, including them meeting with our Main Board and representatives from twelve BIBA Advisory Boards and committees, covering issues like fair value, the Consumer Duty & claims.
> Our first ever political party conference fringe session.
> Leading a delegation of members to a meeting at Treasury to discuss regulation with the Insurance Minister & the FCA
> Launching and delivering so much of our 2024 Manifesto
>Investing in delivery through new appointments in our Public Affairs, Compliance & Conference Teams
> Creating & running our most well attended Conference led by new Conference Director, Emma Chapman & delivering my first CEO address
> Holding our best attended regional tour with the newly appointed Director of Regulation, David Sparkes at 12 destinations, meeting 700 members.
> Launching a new EV scheme with Novo to help with capacity.
> Seeing great progress made by our young broker ambassadors and hosting our ‘Top Guns’ at our Young Broker Day.
> Launching a new initiative to bring students from under privileged areas into the world of insurance broking.
> Having more regional events than ever in our incredibly active regions.
> Representing BIBA at the World Federation of Insurance Intermediaries.
> Rolling out new support on member wellbeing.
> Working with the national press to promote the great work that brokers do.
Whoever wins the election this week, BIBA will seek to work closely with them for the betterment of our members and customers.
I am grateful for the incredible support from the BIBA team & of members, especially from our Advisory Boards, committees & regions. I look forward to working with everyone in year two.

🎉 What a year since Graeme Trudgill FCII, Cert Mgmt became CEO.
📌 He has invested heavily in membership through new employees, schemes, guides, membership support and lobbying on behalf of members with our latest Manifesto.
📌 Stronger relationships have been built through his allyship approach with the regulator, Government and the rest of the industry.
📌 We have also helped achieve lots for members – there is now a growth and competitiveness objective on the regulator, we’ve fended off a risk to the commission model, we’ve launch a careers initiative, seen big increases in levels of signposting, and had the best attended BIBA Conference, Young Broker Day and Tour of the Regions.
📌 We have also held our first ever political party conference fringe event, launched a Fair Value Assessment Framework, and have had more regional events, and more members joining our advisory boards than ever before.
🙌 Thank you to everyone who has supported, engaged and contributed to our work over the last year – it’s a huge collective effort.
