#MissionAccomplished 🌟 Replacing the roof of our hospital’s patient tower was a crucial $2 million investment that has had a profound impact on our ability to provide high-quality care to our patients and maintain a safe, comfortable environment for our staff. Prior to the roof replacement, our facility faced numerous challenges due to the aging and deteriorating condition of the roof. Leaks were a common occurrence, causing disruptions to patient care and potentially compromising the sterility of our medical equipment and supplies. Water damage to ceilings, walls, and floors created potential safety hazards and an unsightly appearance that detracted from the healing atmosphere we strive to maintain at HCA Houston Healthcare Mainland. The leaks also posed risks to our sensitive medical equipment, such as MRI machines and CT scanners, which are critical for diagnosing and treating our patients. Any damage to this equipment could have resulted in costly repairs or replacements, and more importantly, interruptions to patient care. By undertaking this comprehensive roof replacement project, we have addressed these issues head-on. The new roof provides a reliable barrier against the elements, ensuring that our facility remains dry and free from leaks. This, in turn, protects our medical equipment, minimizes disruptions to patient care, and allows our staff to focus on their primary mission of delivering exceptional healthcare services. Moreover, the new roof has improved the energy efficiency of our facility. With proper insulation and advanced roofing materials, we can now better regulate the temperature and humidity levels within the building. This not only enhances patient and staff comfort but also helps us reduce our energy consumption and operating costs, allowing us to allocate more resources to direct patient care initiatives. The completion of this roof replacement project demonstrates our commitment to maintaining a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that prioritizes patient well-being and staff satisfaction. By investing in our infrastructure, we are ensuring that our facility can continue to serve as a beacon of healing and hope for our community for years to come. I’d like to thank our expert roofing consultant - Patty Hall, Andrew Nelson - President of Trident Construction, Inc., and the entire team who we had the pleasure of collaborating with on this important project. #HCA #HCAHouston #HealthcareLeadership #ProjectManagement #HealthcareOperations

Associate at Arup | Fire Engineering | Existing Buildings & Retrofit | Global Structural Fire Engineering Skills Lead
This felt like an important discussion. Having spoken on a similar panel on "lift evacuation" at the 2023 installment of Lift & Escalator Symposium, this year there was a noticeable gear-shift in the conversation on "how can we better use lifts to enable equitable and dignified evacuation for those who have difficulty using stairs" - particularly in existing blocks of flats, where there are usually no on-site staff to assist. Set against the backdrop of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report release, nobody in the room needed convincing that the status quo is unacceptable. Everybody should be safe and feel safe in their home. There was also consensus amongst the panel and attendees that forthcoming codes and standards for new lifts / buildings will not solve the challenges in existing buildings, where striving for perfection will be the enemy of good. How can we adapt existing lifts and buildings to improve safety, today? And what other changes are needed to give residents confidence to overcome the understanding of "in the event of fire, do not use the lift"? Collaboration between fire safety engineers and other designers, the lift industry, owners / operators of residential buildings and other stakeholders are essential to tackle this question and develop the necessary solutions that can work at scale, quickly. It was therefore great to engage with the lift sector at this event. Thanks to the Lift and Escalator Industry Association LEIA and Nick Mellor for the invite and for hosting the panel, and thanks to the other panelists Matt Ryan, Adam Scott and Hywel Davies, and all attendees for the very engaging discussions before, after and during. Lots to follow up on. #SafetyEquity
The Lift & Escalator Symposium panel discussion on evacuation lifts as a means of escape key themes included: - key benchmarks for new evacuation lifts in new buildings - following Hywel Davies brilliant keynote presentation the previous day, the implications of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report recommendations on the evacuation of people requiring level access/egress - change in the culture to using lifts in the event of fire - capacity assessment and assessing the possible numbers of people who might need or opt to use a lift for evacuation - how fire engineers, vertical transportation, lifts, inclusive design and other specialists can come together to work on guidance - the challenge of improving evacuation capability of existing buildings. Thanks Hywel Davies, Eoin O'Loughlin, Matt Ryan and Adam Scott for bringing your thoughts and passion to this discussion. Rachel Smalley you were missed - look forward to seeing you again soon.

In #healthcare facilities, some of the most important upgrades are the ones you won’t typically see, like the #MEP systems. These projects are critical to the mission of the facility to heal patients. Outdated and inefficient plumbing systems can lead to devastating outcomes, like Legionnaires’ disease. A serious strain of pneumonia that can quickly spread, Legionnaires' disease is caught through the swallowing or inhalation of water contaminated with Legionella bacteria into the lungs. Healthcare facilities can have large complex water systems that promote Legionella (the bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ disease) growth if not properly maintained. For numerous hospitals, we have performed a series of facility renovations, upgraded the existing piping and removing sections with low water flow. We’ve successfully replaced entire plumbing systems, replacing lines and fixtures campus-wide, to guarantee clean water and safe facilities for patients, visitors and staff. #PurposeBuilders To learn more about this endeavor and other Richard Group initiatives, visit our website at https://lnkd.in/gpRvKXT #BiggerThanBuildings #HealthcareConstruction #GeneralContractor #Plumbing #MEP #Health #Hospitals
