One of the first questions we hear from people after they’ve navigated quality criteria is “how do I even buy removals?” At Supercritical we see three primary purchasing mechanisms at play: 💳 Spot purchases are carbon credits that are bought ‘on the spot’, with immediate delivery. ⏩ Forward purchases are an individual purchase made at a specified time in the future. 💸 #Offtake agreements are an ongoing agreement where you commit to buying a fixed volume or percentage of your output every month or year for a specified period. Add one vendor to that eval list and the team grows by 2. And each team member now has to have 20, not just 12, interactions across the journey (240 total as a team). There have been a lot of posts about #hellobello bankruptcy filing and the biggest takeaway I saw was the need for diversification. Putting all the eggs in one basket- whether it's a supplier or a customer- is RISK. Even a small issue has the ability to greatly harm. A delay, a line drop, a price increase... these things can be dealt with when there are options. But when you are single sourced or you are 90% dependent on one customer- you have NO choices. This is all very easy to say, but when a company is just starting out -- it can be almost impossible to diversify. How can you multi-source when you are already struggling to hit MOQ's with the supplier you currently have? How can you widen your sales' channels when you are JUST getting going and only one account has signed on? The truth is- you cannot. BUT- what you CAN do is plan for it. Start conversations now with potential suppliers. Keep your eye on new channels and how you want your ideal demand split to be.
