I graduated with my MBA from University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business last month! It’s been one of the most inspiring periods of my life thus far, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. It’s hard to recap everything, but here’s a few highlights: The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management: I was blessed to receive a full scholarship, and joined a cohort of MBA students who care about increasing representation in business. Black Business Students Association: Spent a year serving as Co-President of the Haas BBSA (alongside Flora Morgan, JD, MBA and an incredible board). We dedicated our time to improving the experience of black students at Haas, and I found a lifelong community that I'll never take for granted. Berkeley Lean Launchpad: I chose to get my MBA in the Bay Area so I could learn as much as possible about the startup ecosystem. In my first year, I launched Velma with some brilliant classmates (Mariana Elmais, Jake Olivas, Anhelo Benavides, and Alexander I.) to increase minority access to upskilling programs and tech jobs. In my second year, I actually joined the teaching team as a GSI (with Alan Yang, Jim Hornthal, Kim Polese, Michael Chai, and Jerome Engel). I loved sitting on the other side and using my learnings to help the new cohort of startup teams work through their ideas. Berkeley SkyDeck: Had the pleasure of helping fellow MBA classmates find opportunities to work with Berkeley-based startups (alongside Jack Moore, the rest of the Startup Squad leads, and the killer Skydeck leadership team). Music Startups and Entrepreneurship: Another goal of mine was to explore the intersection of tech and music, and I spent most of my second year on this. I interned with an early-stage music AI startup last summer, recently won a $10k pitch competition with Kev Choice through the HiiiWAV accelerator, and met tons of innovators that are shaping the future of music. #BlackWellnessWeekend: Had the honor of helping Emani H. execute her vision of throwing a conference (hosted by Haas and the BBSA) focused on helping black MBAs and professionals experience various wellness modalities (think chiropractic care and sound baths, but also therapy and life counseling, but also financial and career coaching, and more). Playing Music: Probably the coolest non-school related thing I've done in these two years is reconnect with music and performing. I started a band with my classmates (Jayson Wang, Diarra White, Angelina Donhoff, Mick Mathis), and I've been playing violin in studio sessions and live gigs with Kev Choice and his endless contact list of talented people in the Bay Area. There’s plenty I’m not thinking of at the moment, but this post is long enough and you get the picture. It’s been a ride. I'm currently on the job hunt looking for product opportunities in tech, music, and entertainment. So…. if you hear about any interesting opportunities, please share! Can't wait to see what's next.

I am thrilled to share some fantastic news with you all! 🥳🥳 A few months ago, I had the privilege of participating in the 2023 University Alliance in Talent Education Development (UAiTED) Innovation Competition as part of a dynamic team of six individuals. This competition was designed to harness the power of high-tech innovation to address global sustainable development challenges. 🌍Moreover, it aimed to foster cross-regional, multicultural, and interdisciplinary collaboration in the pursuit of nurturing global talent. ✨✨ I can't begin to express how elated I was 💥when I first learned of this opportunity. However, the journey ahead was far from easy, as I grappled with academic demands 📚and the responsibilities of organizing club activities in university🏛️. What's more, this was an entirely new experience for me, as I had never participated in an innovation competition before. Yet, I am filled with deep gratitude and immense pride in myself for persevering through these challenges, thanks in large part to the unwavering support of my team members who extended their helping hands throughout our journey.🫶🏻🫶🏻 👑 For me, even though our innovation didn't advance to the Grand Final, this competition holds profound meaning and will forever remain etched in my memory. It served as my inaugural foray into the realm of innovation competitions, an experience that has ignited a passionate spark within me🔥. I eagerly look forward to the prospect of participating in more innovation competitions in the future, aiming for even greater achievements.🚀🚀 💎 I stand before the future with renewed determination and self-blessings, knowing that the challenges I faced and overcame during this competition have fortified my resolve. I am committed to continuous self-improvement and honing my abilities, not only for the next innovation competition but for every endeavor that lies ahead. The path to success may be filled with obstacles🛤️, but it is also laden with opportunities for growth and innovation✏️✏️. 💡With unwavering dedication and a thirst for knowledge, I embrace the future with open arms, confident that each experience, whether a victory or a setback, is a stepping stone towards becoming the best version of myself. Here's to a future filled with innovation, hard work, and countless opportunities to make a meaningful impact on the world. #roadtosuccess #innovation #growthjourney #firsttry

These past three weeks, I had the pleasure to immerse myself into the Monash Innovation Guarantee, which has transformed my mindset, skillset, as well as professional network. From the many industry masterclasses, I was fascinated with both of Keri Clarke's masterclasses on introducing the innovation process, as well as the ins & outs of speakership and pitching. In particular, the idea of asking generic questions and The Mom Test, to truly listen to what problem is at hand, was very insightful and impactful when put into practice. I have always held confidence in my public speaking ability, which now has further blossomed thanks to Keri’s session, covering body language, tone, and much more leading up to our industry pitch night. As an innovator, I believe it’s vital to be able to pitch your ideas in a way that wins over whoever is listening, in which I feel empowered to continue to think big and be able to communicate this to a diverse range of disciplines and walks of life. My team and I were tasked to help the Bicycle Network identify and utilise forms of funding to sustain themselves financially over time. This task required an interdisciplinary team to find a solution, which was why the concept of co-design, taught by Sam Rye, was fascinating for me (see more about co-design here - https://lnkd.in/gzNc5vbE). One of my goals coming into this experience was to transform my ability to collaborate with a variety of disciplines and skillsets, to achieve a common goal. Upon reflection, I feel enthused and knowledgeable to continue to co-design in a way that prioritises a culture based on relationships, honesty, participation, creativity, and purpose. In these next six months, I am committed to furthering my innovative mindset and skillset. After being inspired by so many bright minds during this program, I have truly realised how much potential we all have, to make change in whatever we do. I aim to increasingly connect and collaborate within my university extracurriculars, to further my understanding and ability to innovate in an uncertain yet exciting future, both in Australia and across borders. Amidst the conclusion of this program, I extend my upmost appreciation to Susie Ho and the wider #MIG2024 community, my coach Rosa Martorana, team Funding, Ian Lim, and the wider Bicycle Network team, as well as so many more for a transformative three weeks! #Innovation #Speakership #CoDesign

Loved catching up with Ziyaan Virji since we last met in the summer. Inter-generational reciprocal mentorship is a key element of my #purposefulthirdact - learning, impact, fun. Needless to say, lots to catch up on. Of course we started with my recent visit to #Tanzania, a country we both lived in. Each time I talk about my trip, it reinforces how important it is to address unfinished issues, in my case finishing the grieving process of losing my dad when I was 11 years old (https://lnkd.in/ddTH2_2W). Ziyaan’s new project is already having impact - in a nutshell, he is building communities of young people around the world Leaders of Today. He's doing this through a weekly newsletter (a side of the desk project while he is at UBC Sauder School of Business) where he is building one of the fastest-growing communities of young people around the world. As part of his community, Ziyaan sends out a weekly newsletter where he shares tangible ideas and tools for young people to start and amplify their leadership journey. He has a podcast, shares a curated list of 50 fully funded youth leadership opportunities (internships, conferences, grants, etc...) and 30 resources for this community. And listen to this: this community has grown to 60,000 youth since November when it stood at 5,000. Not bad for a side-of the desk project - perhaps it's because it is fuelled by passion. Interested to learn more or partner? 1) If you’re a youth organization, education organization or company that has aligned interests in engaging with young people (11-30), reach out to Ziyaan to explore partnerships. 2) If you’re a young person, join the Leaders of Today community using this link: https://lnkd.in/dYEsU6as As for the reciprocal mentoring, helping youth succeed through #education, #employment and #entrepreneurship aligns perfectly with my purpose; amplifying Ziyaan’s story is a win/win. We started a conversation about learnings from his community-building that I can adopt to create a community of Purposeful Third Actors. Stay tuned!

Let's talk about hidden talents During my experience in the US 🇺🇲 thanks to YLAI / Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative Fellowship I was able to learn a lot about business, but I also learned a lot about myself. 🪓 On Easter day, we received an invitation to dinner from a local family, there in their backyard was an axe throwing gallery. It was then that I discovered that I am a natural axe thrower, able to hit the target 10 times in a row 🎯 an example of how venturing into the unknown can reveal your talents. 🌭 At The University of Texas at Austin spring break student welcome festival, I spontaneously participated in a hotdog eating contest. After six and a half hotdogs, I not only finished fuller but also as the reigning champion, a testament to facing challenges of unexpected. 🎨 At the same festival I found out that there was an annual contest to draw a #Longhorn 🤘 and there were 4 days left to the deadline, I was a little hesitant to participate because of the time and the amount of participants, but I decided to do it, so I started working on my illustration and sent it right on the last day, to my surprise, I got the second place and a great prize. Something that made me think about how many times we underestimate our own abilities. Through these very different experiences, I learned a crucial lesson: the importance of getting out of my comfort zone. Each new attempt, whether it ended in triumph or humbling learning, taught me about my hidden strengths and the joy of discovery. What's Holding You Back? How often do we hold ourselves back, limited by fear of failure or self-doubt? Imagine the possibilities if instead, we said, "Let's see what happens," and took that leap. Life is a tapestry of trials and triumphs: dare to try, dare to fail, and dare to succeed. Now, I challenge you: What hidden talents might you uncover if you dared to try something. #PersonalGrowth #SelfDiscovery #Leadership #CareerDevelopment #Networking #Innovation #LifeLessons #ChallengeYourself #SuccessStories #YLAI2024
