Sobering article about the #teacher shortage in special education. The article states that data from the U.S. Department of Education indicates that 42 states and #Washington, D.C. have fewer special education #teachers than schools need. That’s every state except #Arkansas, #California, #Louisiana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, #Oklahoma, #Oregon and #Utah. Enrollment in special education nationwide has increased by 800,000 in the last 10 years, increasing demand for special educators. The severe reduction of available seats and proposed budget cuts in free, high quality early childcare harm our families. How can we restructure our city’s tattered social safety net? In a new VUE article, the late education advocate Norm Fruchter explores how New York City could secure the lives and futures of NYC’s young children. NYU Metro Center’s Voices in Urban Education (VUE) is an open-access journal published twice annually and endeavors to serve as a “roundtable-in-print” by bringing together diverse education stakeholders with a wide range of viewpoints, including leading education writers and thinkers, as well as essential but frequently underrepresented voices in educational scholarship, such as students, parents, teachers, activists, and community members.
