Spicy take. Most conferences have the potential to be so much better than they actually are. Having attended quite a few — programming is often predictable. Networking, poorly thought out. And general experience, an afterthought. Often the only thing holding it all together are the speakers and not much else. Speak to attendees, and often they’ll share their most memorable moments at these events were either intimate, bold or dynamic. Ones that challenge the experience and format for speakers, and audiences in new and expansive ways. Sure, have your regular presentations and panel sessions that are well-moderated and researched — but don’t stop there. Use the city as a sandbox. Be it through well designed walking tours that delve into the city/region’s past, present, and future in relation to the conference theme. Or a series of intimate dinners throughout the city that pair small groups of people with compelling speakers and talented chefs for an evening. Or perhaps an experience safari that enables people to attend curated or self-guided experiences to learn, listen, play and exchange ideas with others. Or spicy debates of reimagined futures with an eclectic panel (e.g. futurists, educators, entrepreneurs, etc) and an audience voting poll at the end. The current industry bar is pretty low in thoughtful ingenuity and meaningful connection. There is so much breadth (and depth) to innovate on. We need to make it worthwhile for those who give us their time and attention. Or as Priya Parker says: ‘The way we gather matters. Gatherings consume our days and help determine the kind of world we live in, in both our intimate and public realms. Gathering — the conscious bringing together of people for a reason — shapes the way we think, feel, and make sense of our world.’

Warm Data is a concept developed by the international Bateson Institute. ‘Warm Data’ is information about the interrelationships that connect elements of a complex system. It captures the qualitative dynamics and offers another dimension of understanding to what is learned through quantitative data (“cold data”). The implications for the uses of Warm Data may offer a whole new dimension to the tools of information science we have to work with at present. The Warm Data Lab session will be hosted by Carlos Alvarez Pereira, Vice President of the Club of Rome. Afternoon sessions - Open dialogue The afternoon event explores possibilities of how to become ‘careholders’ instead of shareholders in an economy based on competition, exploitation and extraction. Personal impressions from the SXSW 2014 in Austin, TX Sonja, my wife, and I spent the whole week between March 8 and 16 there to get the spirit and personal insights into 'Southby'. To make a long story short: The value of this event cannot be accurately defined because the gain in extraordinary experiences and the improvement in personal relationships cannot begin to be measured in monetary terms. SXSW offers a broad mix of contributions from business, technology, innovation, music, culture and creativity that is certainly unique in this form. The dominant theme this year was - of course - the influence of AI on all of the aforementioned areas. There is probably no other festival of its kind that offers such diversity and variety. It is hardly possible to achieve the best individual result without a little preparation and focus. And there is always a mixture of professional and individual aspects and impressions. After presentations, it is also possible to talk to the people who led the discussion or were interviewed. This makes the whole thing very low-threshold. Even at the evening events and parties, you can always strike up conversations with other fascinating people. Getting through an entire week is exhausting. But this effort disappears in exciting discussions and conversations that constantly generate new ideas and offer opportunities for cooperation. I have rarely met so many interesting people in one place with whom I had such synergetic moments.This brings me to the point that it is the desire for personal and unique experiences that should motivate people to attend SXSW.
