Can #CitizenScience help to strengthen trust in science? This is what scientists from #TUBraunschweig want to find out in the 🤝 joint project “Trust in Citizen Science (TiCS)” together with researchers from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. The project is being funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung with around 900,000 euros. 👥 🔍 “Citizen science is really shaking up the standard procedure of research,” says Dr. Friederike Hendriks from the Junior Research Group fourC at TU Braunschweig and head of the new project. “Research is no longer just produced in an ivory tower and then communicated to a general public. In citizen science, citizens are actively involved in shaping research. This has great potential for building trust in science, in the projects and beyond." 🤝 The team of the joint project is interdisciplinary, and some project modules will be worked on jointly by scientists from the three locations. In addition to Dr. Friederike Hendriks and Prof. Monika Taddicken (Psychology and Communication Science) at TU Braunschweig, Prof. Mario Gollwitzer and Dr. Marlene Altenmüller (Psychology) are responsible for the sub-project at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Dr Susanne Hecker and Silke Voigt-Heucke (Citizen Science Practice Research) from the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin are furthermore involved. During this year's Southwest conference, SXSW 24, in Austin, TX, I had an excellent opportunity to meet with the National Science Foundation (NSF). This organization funds all research projects across United States universities with an annual budget of USD 8.9 billion. During my meeting with the NSF on future research funding areas, several key points I have got to know where NSF invests are: Emphasis on interdisciplinary research Innovation and creativity Focus on societal impact and the Importance of diversity and inclusion Focus on future technologies like Harnessing the Data Revolution Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier Supports collaborative research on sustainable semiconductor-based systems. NSF funds projects across all sizes and Universities based on merit and scope of their vision. We have SERB in India that funds research up to 50 lakhs per project, but Science researchers in India have enough funding but lack reliable fund flow. Governments should enable a consistent funding source for small-scale researchers to foster future research across small universities and remote towns. The sad state is that most of the academic institutions are unaware of many funding sources that are available to them

The theme for Science Week 2023 has been announced by Science Foundation Ireland and it’s time to consider ᴡʜᴀᴛ ɪᴛ ᴍᴇᴀɴꜱ ᴛᴏ ʙᴇ ʜᴜᴍᴀɴ ɪɴ ᴛᴏᴅᴀʏ’ꜱ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ. Human creativity, curiosity and concepts have transformed how we live, how we interact with each other, and our relationship with our planet. Incredible developments have shaped our understanding of ourselves and our world. At times it can feel like changes are out of our control, from environmental emergency to being outpaced by technology. What lies ahead, and what role will science play in this? How will the actions we take now shape our collective human experience for the long term? In an uncertain world, one certainty is that from agriculture to AI, how we live today will not be how we live in the future. Join us for the one day of wonder at the annual Exhibition hosted by University of Galway on Sunday 12th November, 2023 https://lnkd.in/eRwk648

World Science Day for Peace and Development, 10 November 2023 Theme: Building Trust In Science Celebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives. By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. The Day offers the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development – from government officials to the media to school pupils. UNESCO strongly encourages all to join in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development by organizing your own event or activity on the day. The role of science in shaping our collective future can only be fulfilled when there is trust in science. It is trust in science that fuels the development and application of evidence-based solutions to our world’s multifaceted challenges. Trust in science is a complex issue. It affects the way in which scientists operate and the way science is perceived by society. Also, enhancing trust in science strengthens science-based policy decisions and society’s support for their application
