Berlin Science Week’s Post

At the end of May, I had the chance to give my first talk , "How to Study the Impact of a Museum: The Case of the MfN," at the FB3 #KnowledgeLab at the #MuseumFürNaturkunde Berlin. My talk focused on three key points about #impact: 1️⃣ How do we think about the transformative a.k.a. political change in the museums? How do we imagine the future change? To what extent are we able to anticipate the path to this change? 2️⃣ What are the conceptual frameworks underlying the current participatory research practices and impact thinking? How are they applied in practice? I focused specifically on the #TheoryOfChange, but there are other tools, including #ParticipatoryActionResearch and #DesignThinking 3️⃣ The diversity of how different projects understand and practice participation, which is reflected in the scholarship, is often due to the discrepancy between the big goals of the projects and the technicalities and mechanics of evaluation techniques. Here are my personal takeaways 💡 💡 💡 : 💠 We need to further refine our analytical imagination and tools about impact as operating at the different levels: the level of activity, the level of institution, the level of society. 💠 We need more in-depth conversations between participation researchers and practitioners to better understand each other's languages, and to identify gaps, where research could highlight boundaries and barriers to productive collaboration and change. 💠 Importantly, this does not mean that we need to agree on methodologies or tools, but rather that we have a chance to develop a conceptual conversation about change. The European Commission #JointResearchCentre recently published "The Art Science Policy Nexus". Exploring the intersection of art, science, and policy, this scoping study highlights how art-science initiatives influence policy and policymaking through diverse channels like briefs, events, and exhibitions. However, it notes a gap in policymaker involvement in the conception of these projects. Proposing a preliminary typology based on knowledge flow, the study suggests further research into the impact of these interdisciplinary collaborations on policy and societal challenges, urging a deeper look into the long-term effects of art-science-policy engagement. In Bioindustry 4.0 we will also invite an artist to collaborate and engage with the science and research infrastructures involved. As a science centre, we believe that science is for everyone. We’re all about celebrating science as part of our everyday lives – after all, ingenuity, science and technology could have the answer to many of the world’s problems and help to make a better world. Today marks World Science Day for Peace and Development, with a special focus on ‘building trust in science’. Building trust takes time. As much as we want to place ourselves as a trusted resource for everyone, we recognise that people are on individual journeys and one size doesn’t meet all needs. And we know that science centres and museums are part of a wider system that has historically excluded certain groups of people due to bias in society, and academia. Diversity of experience, dialogue and debate is at the heart of what we do. Working alongside our ‘Include Everyone’ pledge, our ‘Open City Research’ area of work tries to overcome challenges that separate people from scientific research, and give our audiences the opportunity to be part of the scientific process. It’s about challenging what it means to be a science centre. Discovering new things and creating new knowledge and building trust in science together. Show them why. Let them resonate with your drive and understand the intricacies of your study. Ask your audience thought-provoking questions, use storytelling techniques, showcase visual aids, reveal surprising findings, and encourage participation. ⏩ Be quick to get to a point Your talk should be fast and engaging to capture and maintain the audience's attention in today's fast-paced world. Speaking quickly helps you cover more ground efficiently, ensuring you convey your message effectively while preventing boredom and disengagement. It also demonstrates your energy and enthusiasm for the topic, encouraging interaction and leaving a lasting impression on your audience.
