Empowering young leaders helps lay the foundation for innovation and long-term success. Our congratulations go out to Berkshire's Timothy Steward vice president and commercial credit officer, and the other emerging leaders who make up the Leadership Capital Region (LCR) Class of 2024. This was a fascinating discussion today. Posing the question 'What is leadership?' to a range of academics and practitioners, I came away realising that our answer to this question varies significantly depending on our context. For some 'leadership' is an individually-embedded, behavioural construct - It's something that people (presumably 'leaders') do. This makes sense if you operate in a traditionally hierarchical, organisational context. The flow on questions then become, 'How do we help people to do it better? 'Is it something that is innate or developable? If it's developable, what's the best way?' and more. For others, 'leadership' is a process that emerges from a system, context or situation. It still involves behaviour but it's collective behaviour in pursuit of a goal or change. It's less about an individual, what they do and how they do it. Instead it's about what emerges, and how and why, when people work together to create impact. This is particularly relevant to community and multi-stakeholder, collaborative contexts - and increasingly important in emerging corporate and organisational environments as complexity increases and the line between 'for profit' and 'for purpose' blurs. Why do these different views matter? Firstly because the very conversation goes in vastly different directions depending on which view of leadership you take - and it's hard to talk about it coherently if we're talking about different things. It also matters when it comes to developing leadership. Are we developing leaders as individuals to demonstrate specific behaviour and execute actions? Or creating the right environment to allow leadership as a process to emerge and thrive? Each will require a very different developmental approach and knowledge base. Looking forward to the next webinar in this series! Albert Einstein’s view that “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them” underscores the need for a deeper consideration of the leadership we need for the future. I know Tara and I were of mixed emotions as we completed the Peer Leadership Program yesterday. So proud of the Program grads for the distance traveled in their leadership journey AND bummed that we will not get to continue to work with, and learn from, them each month as we have for over a year. I do know our paths will continue to cross and I am excited to see what comes next! #fireinside #peerleadership #leadershipdevelopment #leadershipcoaching
Sandi Roberts and Tara Burley were fully in the space of celebration, gratitude, and yes, fun(!) as they mindfully completed the 16-month journey of Fire Inside's Peer Leadership Program with 12 courageous leaders. Extending a big congratulations to the 2024 graduates! We are celebrating your dedication to the practice of leadership: Becoming more aware of intention aligned with impact; creating inclusive and safe spaces; nurturing relationships with meaningful connection; expanding your capacity through consistency and presence; and leveraging vulnerability, even when, especially when, it felt very uncomfortable to do so. Your work places, shared spaces, and the world are the benefactors of your unique leadership! #courageovercomfort #presencebasedleadership #leadershipdevelopment #vulnerability #peerleadershipprogram
