80-90% of people with disabilities experience abuse or neglect. People with disabilities are also seven times more likely to experience sexual abuse than the rest of the population. They have a much higher rate of behavior that is judged as unacceptable in society. We have written off that behavior as part of disability for so many years. What if it is a response to the abuse and neglect? I'll go further, it is a response to the abuse and neglect. A response that made sense in the moment, but may look unacceptable away from the initial experience. We need to figure out what that behavior is telling us, and meet the person's needs in order to see a change in behavior. #livedexperience #trauma #disability #behavior

In this episode, I interview Paritosh Joshi and Julia Pappageorge who are the co-authors of the paper “Reimagining Disability: A Call to Action” published in the Developmental Disabilities Network Journal. In the article, they compare the two main models of disability, the medical and social models. The medical model believes that people are not “normal” if they have a disability and blames them for not fitting in. Earlier this year, the American Association for Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities proposed a new framework for psychological assessment and treatment. I was invited to write a commentary on the framework, which is now published and available online. Assessment and psychological intervention for people with intellectual disabilities is an under researched area, and we still have a lot of work to do. The AAIDD framework is fantastic in providing a structure and guide for clinicians working in the intellectual disability space to follow. My commentary available below. 1moTo bad the reneged on Santa Fe NM bonus. We were promised $1500 if we were to stay until our transition was final. The actually announced this in a company meeting!! This was awful some staff received over the amount while others barely got half! So disrespectful and rude to treat loyal employees who were dedicated to their clients and to be treated like this is wrong! Benchmark basically lied to it’s staff.
